We clear the woods by the time the sun starts peeking out over the horizon and I can’t help but glance behind me every few minutes, willing Rick to appear. I am traveling in the middle of the party with Evanora and Carl flanking me on either side, my father steadfast at the front.
A second party started out an hour before us with my decoy in place, but there is still a tension resonating through the group. We will be out in the open, vulnerable to attack, until we reach my father’s compound.
As we approach the base of the mountain we have to cross over, I take one final look back and wipe away a wayward tear. Evanora puts an arm around me in a gesture of comfort.
“Don’t worry, Raven. I’m sure the Alpha will come to his senses,” Evanora says.
“He better,” Carl mutters under his breath.
“Do you know that for sure?” I ask her with desperation in my voice. She does see the future after all.
