Chapter 57: That's the point.

A loud bang rang out through the tavern as Kalon's sword clashed against the fabric of the training dummy. The sword flew from his hands and landed on the floor behind him, narrowly missing his face as the blade launched through the air.

Although he didn't use Qi to attack the dummy, somehow, his attack seemed a lot stronger than it did previously. It was almost twice as strong as what he was able to do before, and he found it simply amazing, even if his own sword almost cut him. Kalon stood motionless as his mind ran wild.

'That was amazing! How is that even possible? I didn't know that just reaching the first stage of cultivation would be this good. From what Roah told me, It shouldn't be much different than before, but this is awesome!' Kalon thought as he heard Igris cough behind him.

"Ahem, I see you have brute force. But your swordsmanship seems lacking, yet you seem to have an aura around you that tells me that this isn't all you've got, is it?" Igris asked with a look of suspicion. He seemed to have read Kalon just like he could read his sword. He knew from a glance that Kalon wasn't very well trained with swords, and it was primarily brute force. But the only sword technique that he did know required him to use two swords.

"That's right, but it's a little complicated. The only sword technique that I know is supposed to be used with two swords. I never learned one-handed swordsmanship." Kalon replied with an awkward lie because he knew how strange it was. Most people went from one hand to two.

But Kalon was never taught any techniques since he wasn't a member of the army in the Sylton empire. So it was down to his master to find a technique that the empire didn't own. It just so happened that the only technique Master Ranwald had that didn't belong to the army was a duel wielding sword technique.

"You know a double sword technique? Now, where did you learn a thing like that? Roah told me that they found you at the mountain pass border. The Sylton empire is pretty well known for its double sword technique. You wouldn't be a spy that was sent to learn our plans, would you?" Igris asked with a cold glare that he directed towards Kalon as he looked him up and down, seemingly sizing him up.

"I- I…" Kalon stuttered as he replayed the words in his head. He didn't think that he would be found out so quickly and just from a simple sword technique. He knew that it was a bad idea to head to the Kingdom of Ysaven, but he knew that it was the only way to save his mother. But now, he was beginning to regret it.

Igris stared at him for a few moments as a smile crept across his lips.

"Haha, Did you think that I was going to attack you or report you to the guards? It's ridiculous to think that a brat like you could be a spy, but other people might think differently, so make sure you don't show anyone that technique until you are strong enough to protect yourself." Igris laughed, dismissing any suspicion he might have had.

'What, just happened? Does he really think I'm a spy? Or was that just a joke?' Kalon wondered as Igris turned around and reached back into the room where he kept all of his swords and began to fumble around before coming back holding a simple looking sword and an old dusty book.

"Here, I will give you these. The sword is just a regular steel sword with a durability enchantment placed on it so it won't be broken easily. It would be best if you used this instead of that sword you have there since it will give you an accurate representation of your own strength.

Because your sword has a hidden feature of strengthening attacks if it senses even the faintest amount of Qi, that's why it flew from your hands. The attack was simply too strong for your grip. So this will be helpful until you become stronger.

And this book has two simple techniques within it. One of them is the basic technique they teach to soldiers here in the capital. And the other is a technique that I came up with when I was younger. Either pick one or use both if you really want to. It's your choice. But try not to use two swords until you become a guardian trainee at the very least." Igris instructed as he pulled out a small leather pouch and placed both the sword and the book within it as a flash of light filled the room.

'A universe bag? Roah had one just like that, didn't she?' Kalon thought as he looked at the two items magically fit within a bag that was only a fraction of their size.

"It only has three cubic metres of storage space. But it should come in handy for you. You should also put your sword inside so we don't get stopped by soldiers on our way to the school." Igris said with a smile before handing the bag to Kalon, taking a step back and picking a random sword from the room, and strapped it to his belt.

"Wait, you want to go right now? But didn't you bring me down here to train because I was upset? You said that I should train when I'm upset because it would make me stronger as it did for you." Kalon asked with a look of confusion.

"If I told you pigs could fly, would you believe me? Do you think I would just give away secrets like that if they actually worked? I could make a fortune selling that information to people. Why would I just tell you something like that? I only brought you down here to see how you would fair against the dummy.

And also because I don't have the patience to listen to your crying. At least I got you to stop. So pick up your sword, and let's get going." Igris laughed before blowing out the candle inside his sword safe and then locking the door.

"You lied to me!?" Kalon asked with outrage. He had known Igris for less than a day, and he had gotten his hopes up with a training tip from someone who had been fighting with swords for longer than he had been alive. But it turned out to be a lie.

"Yup, that's how the world works, kiddo. People lie, cheat and murder. It's not a good place, but we make the most of it. Now come along. I'm not going to wait around all day. I have to open the tavern soon. I can't afford to keep the customers waiting all day." Igris replied and then walked back up the stairs.

'He's an asshole.' Kalon insulted Igris silently before picking up his sword, stuffing it into the universe bag, and then following him up the stairs and back out into the seating area of the tavern.

"That was quick. I thought you two would be down there all day. But you seemed to have cheered him up a little." Aria smiled as she saw that Kalon was no longer crying but was now holding a small leather pouch close to his chest.

"Well yeah, I'm great with kids. But we're going to head up to the school right now. I want to get it over with already." Igris said before leaning in to kiss Aria's cheek and then walked past her towards the door.

"You're going in the morning? But isn't that the time most of the people gather to try their luck?" Aria asked with a look of confusion. It seemed as though it was going to be busy at the school, which made Kalon question what was going on. Roah didn't tell him that the enrolment exam was anything special, so he assumed that it was an everyday event or something. But if so many people gathered every day, why would they still need to hold exams?

"That's the point," Igris said with a smile before opening the door. Kalon followed closely behind as he walked out into the open to see the crowd of customers still lining up at the door.
