章 88: Tear Of Thunder

"How do you know about the Tear of Thunder?" mentor Belti's narrow eyes bore holes into Ben as he stood less than a metre in front of Ben.

Mentor Belti's gaze lingered on Ben, but behind his strict gaze was even more evident astonishment. Not many knew of such a thing, Tear of Thunder. In fact, Belti was confident to say only less than ten in the whole of Phantom knew what was Tear of Thunder and even less knew he had one.

Mentor Belti looked at Ben like an eagle even though astonished, anger was brewing. If Ben should give a wrong answer then he won't hesitate to descend his Mindpower on Ben and once done he'll go pay a visit to whoever sent his student to him in a request of his must prices possession.

Ben could literally see the space around his mentor twist, his aura was like a dam about to implode. He has to be smart when answering or else he would have a hard time later on.

"I stumbled across the term when I was on a mission to Angels valley, says it increases the power of the Lightning element tremendously." Ben took out his Hunter's badge showing his stance as a Hunter.

"So you're a Hunter? How did you know I'll know about the Tear of Thunder and how many people knows about this?" his mentor kept throwing questions upon questions to Ben.

"Yes mentor, I'm A Hunter. I am the only one, sir."

"As your mentor I am obliged to support your initial stage of training till I no longer can. That I can do, but what you ask... if you must know even big and medium sized Magic Institutes will kill to get their hands on a Tear of Thunder, even a weak Tear. Needless to say, what you ask for is highly valuable and cannot be searched but can be gotten through luck."

"What can I do to find a Tear of Thunder?" Ben asked seeing hope.

"Come with me."

Mentor Belti led Ben to the only door in the lab, the entrance. Waving his palm over the surface of the door, runes emerged and moved according to the way his hands moved. When he stopped he opened the door.

Looking inside the room was pitch black, not even the lights from outside could penetrate the curtain of darkness. The closer Ben gazed the more it looked like he was looking at a pitch black mirror with no reflection.

"Ben, do you know about a Soul Contract?" mentor Belti asked with his back facing the blackness and his hand behind his back.

Ben was taught about different types of Contracts in his Runology class, he wasn't shown how to make one but only that they are made through runes. To mentor Belti's question Ben nodded.

"This contract will guarantee that whatever you'll be seeing from this moment onwards must never be leaked out under any circumstances. The contract will do just that." pulling out a piece of paper from his storage ring it was engraved in runes stacked upon each other, this is a very powerful contract. Like he was taught in his class, Ben only had to direct his Mindpower to the paper.

After Ben signed the Soul Contract via Mindpower they walked into the black mirror. Right when he stepped inside the black mirror, he felt like he was no more on school grounds or even Belti's tower. He felt detached from the outside world, everybody's presence nonexistent. Fear began to creep up at him. Quickly calling out to Lucy, he was relieved he could still hear the fake emotional voice of the super computer.

"Where are we?" Ben asked in wonder. The place was isolated from the world, but, yet not.

"This... is the power of a Lightning-type Spellcaster, to create your own personal space. The more powerful you are the greater your creation. Come with me." mentor Belti answered while beckoning Ben to follow.

They walked into a room that was entirely black inside. In the room there was nothing but a single table occupied by three jars containing three different glowing coloured substance within each jar. A single candle was placed in the centre with the jars in a circular placement.

Leading Ben to the table, mentor Belti went to the outside of the table facing Ben.

"In front of you are three drops of Tear of Thunder, you can only choose one. However, just like the contract states, it doesn't come free. When I need your help you must answer to my call." mentor Belti's voice sounded like a threat.

If it wasn't for Mr Grant specifically telling Ben to use a Tear of Thunder when about to form a Lightning-type Elemental Sphere he would never sign a darn contract that would be bound to his soul. Worse yet is, he has no fucking idea what the use of a Tear of Thunder would be to him. Thunder doesn't fucking cry!

All the books he's read from his Badlands collection, since those from the school's library made no mention about it, didn't give any helpful information. What else could he do? He was told to do what could or would or even might help him.

"Yes mentor, I understand." almost rolling his eyes from annoyance but kept a steel face. "Which should I choose?" asked Ben after looking at the three jars, not knowing which to choose from.

"Since you want to form a Lightning-type Sphere you must have been taught about types of lightning, right?" mentor Belti said scrutinizing Ben before adding, "Hmm, I have once read in an ancient book that only a Lightning Friend can commune with lightning."

"Saying I'm a Lightning Friend, you mean I have to communicate with the jar... or the Tear within the jar. This is insane." Ben mumbles the last part to himself.

Hearing no other reply from his mentor Ben tries to commune with the Tear of Thunder. Clearing his mind, he reached out his Mindpower to wrap around each Tear inside the jar.

Unbeknownst to anyone, underneath Ben's bed a black rock the size of a human head with purple and silver veins interweaving round it's body began shining ever brightly. Crackles of lightning could be seen spiraling round the black rock while floating two inches above the ground.

***

People who were currently within mentor Belti's vicinity could see the thick dark cloud hanging over his tower extending and spreading towards other places, fierce lightning would flicker in the sky. The rumbles if thunder could be heard from afar.

A lot of people who heard the rumbles of thunder turned to look at the direction in which the sound was coming from. Some people were in shock, some were glad, some looked at the view in awe, while some had solemn expressions.

"Good luck, my friend." from the faculty of Fire an old man stained with a few gray beards said in a low voice.

***

In the dark room stood Ben with his eyes closed and mentor Belti facing each other. A round table holding three jars with three Tears of Thunder with a candle in their centre illuminating as far as its lights could reach.

According to what Ben was taught and what he'd read about the different types of lightning there is in books was that they have different types of lightning. Before Ben were three of the most powerful types of lightning there. How his mentor for his hands on them he doesn't wish to fathom ,but right now he is given the opportunity to take one for himself, which one though? It is true that all three suits verb perfectly, the question is, which does he prefer?

Yellow lightning has a high attackiìûing power but only inflicted external injuries, burns and cuts included.

Silver lightning had a high voltage that electrocutes the body's nervous system, however, once the lightning spell touches the target it's power drops by fifty percent.

Purple lightning had a high voltage attack with the most powerful paralytic effect, including serious shock to the target that leaves permanent damage.

These are incredibly great choices, and yet they all had their flaws. Like the first, Yellow lightning.

Yellow lightning only inflicts external injuries; What if your opponent should have an earth shield or armour raised the attack becomes completely useless.

For the silver lightning, it can only be good when used in an prolonged battle, so when it's in contact with the target now often tree electrocuting effect increases by half. Now the down side about this lightning is that it is slow, not snail slow but with the enhancement of the body someone with a profession can easily dodge the attacks. It can only be good for surprise attacks and then that's all.

And then there's the purple lightning although it's damages are permanent it's paralytic effects doesn't last for long, how long does it last? ne may ask. It last only for five seconds.

Even though in battle many things can happen at any second Ben doubted it was possible. Maybe because Ben lacked experience in such battle, as indeed every second counts.

The more Ben concentrated the deeper his connection with the lightning element became. The Tears didn't speak per se but they had emotion, it was just like he felt when filtering the chaotic and violent Lightning energy in Evelyn. Their emotions were strong.

The Tears conveyed to Ben through their emotion that the purple Tear of Thunder was more suited for him. With that Ben, after more than an hour of standing with closed eyes finally opened them, a flicker flashed in Ben's eyes. Looking back at the table he pointed to the purple one. All three Tears began humming as their glow brightened.

It was a song only Ben could hear, one of the most beautiful and heart soothing song. A song of joy.

"That one." he said pointing to the purple Tear of Thunder.

Mentor Belti stretched his hand towards the glass jar with the purple glow, with a simple hand gesture he made it levitate and move towards Ben at the other side of the table.

Ben grabbed the floating jar with his hands. Just as his hands made contact with the jar holding a powerful treasure all that was happening in the outside world returned to normal. The thunder cloud returned to staying only around mentor Belti's magic tower.

Minutes later nothing else happened, those with shocked and awe went back to their task while those with glad expressions became sad and those with solemn expression were even sadder.

To them they have lost a stronger wizard from being born.

Ben hid the jar in his storage pouch before they both left the isolated space.

"Remember, as for your other elements you can make stronger Elemental Spheres even if you've already formed it, it's called reforging. However, it's also a very dangerous, if you want to increase the quality of your spell models you must be careful. I won't be around at all times."

"Yes mentor." Ben bowed before leaving his what now looked like his office instead of a lab.

"Looks like I finally have a little hope." mentor Belti mumbled as a cold glint flashed in his eyes.
