Sunlight, already filtered by the layer of mist hanging above this Hidden Valley, was at a premium under the jungle canopy. The few rays that broke through the lush barrier to reach the ground did so with little regard to shedding any actual light. Instead, they were more like wisps of lighter-colored darkness dotting the gloom.

What would have been super cool would have been if we were hiking through the jungle by the light of flickering torches held high in our sweaty hands. Instead, Xander and Cecil waved flashlights back and forth, totally ruining the mood. I asked for a flashlight too, but was shot down. Something about conserving batteries.
