章 97: Chapter 97

Chris continued to sleep through the next day. Brennan stayed right beside her throughout all of it. Wiping the sweat as it beaded on her brow, keeping her fever down. If he had to leave he always rushed back to her. Eating his meals at her bedside. Afraid to let her out of his eyesight for too long just in case she would wake up and panic again.

When she regained consciousness again, Brennan was still sitting at the head of the bed. He leaned back into the wall and slept lightly. She had to crane her neck to see him, but she could hear his soft snores.

This time she had more clarity, although her body was still numb. Looking around, she tried to take in her surroundings as best as she could. There wasn't much to look at. A shabby curtain covered the room's entrance, a couple scattered books and personal items were on the floor.

The last thing she remembered was a little fuzzy, but she figured that she must have fainted and been dragged away. Her eyes moved to her shoulder, she both cursed her fate and thanked it. Guarding her left side had always been an issue, that, and the fact that it was the one she always managed to throw out of place, it had suffered more than its fair share of injuries. But luckily, her dominant arm managed to make it out unscathed, it would have been worse if it had been the right one that got hit.

She was grateful not to be able to feel the pain associated with the wound. However, it was a dangerous state. If her nerves were permanently deadened it could have drastic consequences. Focusing all her energy she tried to move her toes, even though she couldn't feel them, she could see them as they wiggled beneath the blanket. She breathed a sigh of relief, next she focused on her fingers. The ones on her right seemed to respond well, if only a little sluggish. But try as she could, her left hand would not move at all. Letting out a shaky breath she tried again, frightened by its stillness she had to look away. There were more important things to take care of than a useless limb.

Leaning into her right side she slowly peeled herself up from the bed. Waiting for the dizziness to pass as she sat upright. The motion woke Brennan, but he made no comment. Instead he waited for her to ask for his help.

He had seen her in a similar state many times before, not ever this bad, but seeing her bandaged up was almost normal. She didn't like being manhandled, times like this she loathed being touched. He had spent hours convincing her that it would be easier if she allowed him to change her dressing instead of doing it herself. In the end she relented only to stop his endless speech.

Her bare back was covered only by the bandage wrapped around her. It's white color almost blended in with her skin. He could tell just by the waxen look of her back that she was still suffering from blood loss.

Tearing his eyes away he slipped off of the bed, causing her to look back at him. She looked extremely unwell, her under eyes and cheeks were both sunken in, skin lackluster. But she didn't look like she was going anywhere quickly.

He walked over to the small chest that sat at the foot of the bed. Periodically looking back at Chris to make sure she wasn't going to make a mad dash to stand up again. Flipping up the latches he rooted around inside trying to find what he was looking for. One by one he sorted through the folded clothes looking for anything that would fit.

There were no pants to be found in the chest, and even if there were it would be hard to get them on her with ease. Closer to the bottom he saw an olive green dress. Lifting it up he let it unfurl, it looked like it would fit, and its style was less restrictive than most of the others.

With dress in hand he walked back to Chris's side. She had not moved from her upright position, but she was wiggling her toes and her fingers. He noticed that she didn't look at them as they moved. Her eyes stayed closed as she kept her breathing steady.

"Can I help you get dressed?"

Her grey eyes peaked open. Looking up at him with a tired gaze.

"That's fine."

He didn't need anything more. As he opened the whole for her head to go through, he noticed that the dress was actually in two parts. The full length was flowy and loose, but there was an attached bodice that could be tightened and fastened by the silky laces in the front. It was just as well, and Brennan couldn't risk her changing her mind.

They had done this multiple times before so there was nothing new to this. It was always a challenge getting her shirt on for the first day of two after dislocating her shoulder. But they had a system that worked well enough.

Guiding her left arm through the short puffed sleeve he worried that the pressure of the fabric against her wound might be painful, but she didn't act like she was hurting. In fact, she didn't act like she felt anything at all. It was alarming the way she didn't wince or even make the slightest of sounds, he wondered if he should ask, but decided it was easier not to.

The rest of the dress went on just as easily as if it had been a shirt. Leaving only the actual sturdy bodice to take care of. He leaned on the bed to get close enough to grab at the stings. Gently he tightened them only enough to keep the bodice from hitting into her every time she moved. At the end, he finished with a small bow thinking of his sister and how many times he had tied her dresses. He missed her, but his thoughts were interrupted by Chris before he could delve any further into his worry.
