章 302: Emergency redeployment (2)

{Dismantling a steam train… what an idea! It sounds insane but if you succeed, things will be a lot easier for us. I'll get you those plans and diagrams. Go take a look at the situation while I'm at it.}

Can you spawn me near… what was her name? Blood?

{She'll be there.}

I appear in a verdant forest. The trees are pretty dense on this floor and there's not much sunlight penetrating through the foliage. So where Jade who isn't Jade?

"You are my coworker?"

Not Jade looks… well she's clearly evolved since I've last seen her. Her body is much bigger and there are strange cracks covering her body as if it had been broken apart and then pieced back together.

"Hi there… I'm Guy. Do you have a plan of attack yet? If you are free, I could use some additional firepower."

"Hmm, I'll join you if you can agree to let me fight at the front. I want to kill as much as possible!"

"I'll definitely try to satisfy your wishes."

"Good. I'm Blood."

She turns her head away as if the conversation is done for her. I guess that went reasonably well.

{Don't sell yourself short. So far, Blood has had the inclination to murder everyone except one of her clients on sight. You are only the second person she didn't feel like killing.}

That's a bit messed up…

I walk through the dense forest with Blood following behind me. It does feel good to know I have a biological killing machine as my permanent bodyguard. Using the map, I quite easily locate the closest set of tracks. These adventures actually cut a swathe right through the forest. The tracks look fairly ordinary, made of steel, low to the ground with little space to mess with them.

I'm entertaining the idea of dropping a few trees on the tracks but that would hardly faze an armore train at full speed. It would make more sense to use the trees as a diversion while breaking the tracks behind the obstacle. That way they should derail while at full speed.

{They have some way of checking the tracks ahead of them. They will like just reverse and get out of there if you destroy the tracks.}

Do they have multiple routes?

{They do, they can reverse upon meeting an obstacle and return to the nearest train station to use a different route.}

So we'd have to destroy all routes at the same time to stop them for a while. And I guess they'll just repair them wherever we aren't focusing our forces.

{Or they'll just lay down new tracks to get around us.}

That sounds a little to easy for them but I guess they can do that if they are willing to through enough resources at us.

So, the main goal here is to find a way to continuously hinder them. And I suppose we'll have to find a solution that works without us present.

{That would be necessary for us to make it in the long run. We can't have so many employees stationed in one dungeon at all times. Any bright ideas?}

The only solution I can think of, is to overload their system. If we can create more problems than they can solve at any given time, they'll be routed.

{And how would you do that?}

That depends among other things on how dumb the orcs on these floors are. If I can train them to form coherent units capable of destroying train tracks and maybe even hijacking trains, things might work out.

{That sounds like a plan.}

A plan I'll need time, information and resources for. All of which I doubt I'll have enough of.

"Blood, could you drop a few trees on the tracks? I want to give the next train a nasty little surprise."

"Do I get to kill?"

"Unfortunately, no. I don't know when the next train is coming so waiting is a waste of time. We'll leave them a bit of a headache before moving on."

"Sigh, I suppose you're right. I'll drop some trees."

With a brutal swipe of her tail, Blood sends a dozen tree tumbling over onto the tracks. She doesn't stop until at least fifty trees have collapsed onto the tracks.

I squat next to the tracks behind the fallen trees and begin to send magic into the ground. Slowly, the ground is raised and the tracks are bent along with it. All I'm doing is creating a bump under the tracks to raise about one meter of tracks but the drain on my mp is insane. I suppose that bending the metal tracks takes up most of the additional cost.

What I'm hoping to do here is to create a ramp of sort. The tracks are a bit bent but mostly undamaged so I'm curious if they can tell.

With the speed and weight of an armored train, this bump should send them right into the air. Once the train has left the tracks, it probably won't be able to perfectly land back on them. Derailing is the natural consequence after that.

So, with my little earthen bump set and a dozen trees to keep them from seeing it we move on. I'm aiming for the nearest group of green dots, hoping they'll be the orcs I was promised.

{Good news, I got the plans you wanted. I uploaded them onto the dungeon map interface. Take a look but don't be too disappointed if you can't dismantle it.}

I keep walking as I open the dungeon map. Next to the map is a floating folder that opens at my mental command. There's a blueprint of an armored train as well as a rough draft of a train station that looks more like a fortress.

Looking at the schematically drawn train, I immediately will my dismantling skill to take effect. I'm not sure what category of monster an armored train is comparable to but I can't see how it's that different from a monster.

And indeed, as if attracted by a magnet my sight is drawn to certain points of the blueprint.
