章 228: Horrors of the dungeon (3), intermission

After forty minutes of running blindly with Clive in the lead, we have arrived at a somewhat different part of the dungeon. The badger kin guards stopped following us as we stepped into the new area.

While we were running I attempted to draw a map for us to trace our way back when we wanted to leave. Looking at the scraggly lines I question my drawing ability but it will suffice for us to backtrack.

We scan our new surroundings and I'm relieved to see that it is still in the style of linear corridors. Labyrinths or caves are a nightmare to navigate.

Unlike before, when each corridor had multiple doors on each wall between intersections, there is now only one door between every intersection. That leads me to believe that the rooms inside are much more spacious.

Additionally, the previously bare corridor walls now have various objects leaning against them. Most of them are coffins but I also spot a few stacks of wooden crates and weapon racks.

This area wasn't mentioned to us by the previous explorers so we are officially in uncharted territory.

"Should we enter one of the rooms to check out if there's any loot?"

Savi excitedly skips toward the door and attempts to push it open. The door does not budge. So far all doors were opened toward the corridor so that is no surprise. However, when Savi pulls on the door, she struggles to open it. Under her full exertion, the door opens ever so slowly.

"Come over and help me! This thing weighs like a ton!"

Before any of us move to help her, Ponto and I take a look into the room through the gradually expanding opening. Inside I see many open chests filled with what looks to be gold. I can't be too sure though since without light the telltale sparkle gold usually has is absent.

There are also a few pedestals. A particularly large round pearl catches my eye and when I see Ponto turn around with a cash-lusting grin, I know he saw it too. That pearl is the size of a tennis ball!

Having made sure that no monster is awaiting us if we fully open the door, we help Savi pull open the door and enter. The door closes behind us but who cares, there's nothing dangerous in this room anyway.

"Look at that pearl! If we auction it we'll earn a fortune."

Clive thinks the same as me and Ponto. The three of us approach the pearl with the girls being more captivated by a pair of gilded bracelets inlaid with various crystals and probably heavily enchanted.

Clive grabs the pearl and slowly lifts it. No trap gets triggered, no restriction keeps Clive from lifting the pearl, and I am starting to wonder if it's even a real pearl.

Just when my doubts are about to hit a peak, a problem occurs. After carefully lifting the pearl from the pedestal, Clive attempts to pull the pearl toward himself. It moves a few centimeters before being pulled back as if attached to an elastic band.

"What the hell is this? What sick mind places a treasure and makes it so it can't be taken! That's against dungeons rules!"

Ponto unsheaths one of his blades and jumps to strike the air where by the direction of the pull the elastic band should be.

"Dungeons can't make treasures unobtainable! It's probably just an invisible cord that's attached to the pearl. All we need to do is cut it!"

Before the blade can get far, the pearl is yanked out of Clive's hand and shoots back. The pearl hits Pontoʼs blade causing sparks to fly everywhere. As the pearl continues sailing through the air Clive runs after it.

I feel like something is wrong with that pearl and quickly use one of my eye skills to check. The unveiling eye skill allows me to see all things hidden. However, I can only see things that are hidden and nothing else. Furthermore, once I stop using the skill the eye I used it with is blind for the same amount of time the skill was used. Hence the reason I didn't want to use it in the beginning. After activating the skill, the vision of my left eye becomes blurry and I know that my eye has turned wholly turquoise.

The moment the blurriness fades there is only one thing left in my left eye's vision. Terror grips me as my right eye sees Clive chase after the alleged pearl while my left eye shows that the pearl is in truth something completely different.

"Clive, jump back now!"

The trust within our team is strong so Clive jumps back without hesitation. Right then, the pearl he had been closely chasing flies up and a giant maw filled with countless sets of teeth emerges from the ground and clamps shut where Clive had been moments ago.

I stop using my skill and my left eye goes blind. The monster is coming out of hiding so further using the skill will only lengthen the period of blindness.

"Everyone run!"

My danger senses are tingling like crazy as a giant angler fish phases out of the ground already opening its maw to take another mighty chomp at Ponto who is closest and probably pissed it off by striking at its invisible rod.

That thing's level is definitely in the 200s or higher. Clive's face tells me that he feels it's overpoweringly stronger than him as well. I dart toward the door and am the first to reach it. I slam into the door like an idiot because I forgot how heavy it is. Despite pressing against it with all my strength the door barely moves at all. Ponto and Savi slam into my back which hurts but at least the door is opening a slight bit quicker but it's still moving at a painfully slow pace.

"Brace for impact or get out of the way!"
