Once again I have reached the maximum level of my current form. This time things went a lot smoother since all I had to do was grind levels.
Cruella had advised me to make becoming an omni slime my next evolutionary step. I already fulfilled the conditions needed for unlocking that path of evolution and it is an undiscovered species.
How do I know that it's a good choice? Simple really. The process of analogy. The conditions to become an elemental slime were to have various elemental resistances that were then combined during evolution. The condition to evolve into an omni slime is to have even more different resistances.
What will they combine into?
Honestly, we will not know until we try. However, chances are that they will form a resistance against everything. Maybe not everything. But most things.
If I train that skill high enough I'll be very hard to kill. With that kind of life insurance, I can afford to explore the dungeon and increase our safety. I might even find a better-hidden place for us to stay in.
"Darwin, stop daydreaming and get ready for your evolution. Gobi and Bonerattle are already waiting."
Cruella sounds a bit impatient. Understandably, the three of us are about to evolve and join the community's strongest combat forces. Lately, there have been more adventurers entering the dungeon so a bit of a powerup will do us some good.
All three of us meet in one cave with Veronica and Cruella there to make sure nothing goes wrong. However, the moment my evolution begins I know something bad is about to happen.
Evolution usually happens while the monster is blissfully unconscious. Only when there is a threat beyond all measures will consciousness be retained. Once the threat to the monster itself becomes concrete the monster will even be able to move during its evolution.
The fact that I'm able to stay conscious without seeing the threat is already a very bad sign. Only beings as strong or stronger than the fire drake outside our hideout can cause that.
However, since the threat to myself has yet to become concrete, I am unable to move and tell Veronica or Cruella. I try my hardest to give them a sign but my body refuses to budge.
"This is strange."
Cruella seems to have noticed something being off. I can only hope that she realizes the situation quickly.
"Something up, Cru?"
"Don't call me that! It's probably nothing but I sensed some tension from those three just now. But when I checked with my skill there was nothing wrong."
No! Don't doubt yourself! You are right, something is wrong.
A soft tremor rocks the small cave we are in and my worry triples. What was that?
Veronica and Cruella are concerned too so Veronica hurriedly leaves to take a look while Cruella stays with us. More tremors along with the sounds of battle sound as Veronica runs back into the cave.
"Cru! We're under attack! They killed the drake and have breached the southern entrance."
"That's bad, we need to go help now!"
"No! Uncle Gary said he could stall them since the strongest one stayed outside. We need to guard these three!"
You shouldn't guard us! You should escape, now!
I wish my body could just let me move for a second to tell them that. Alas, no such miracle happens and the sounds of battle outside slowly grow closer. My anxiety only multiplies as the minutes trickle by.
Then a big shock rocks the cave and a loud human voice resounds everywhere.
"I want the caterpillar-type monster alive. I don't care what you do with the rest of them but that one belongs to our hall!"
"Is that?"
"The strong one who stayed outside. We need to go fight!"
"No! As you said, those three need protection. Since he wants to capture me I'll draw the strong one away. You stay here?"
"You can't. He'll kill you Cru!"
"Did you not listen? He wants me alive."
Cruella slips out of the cave leaving Veronica dumbfounded for a moment before she rushes after her. The wait continues and the sounds of battle do not diminish at all. At last, Gobi begins to move. His arms are much thicker now and when he picks up his axe he looks quite strong.
"Ai now u kan haer my. Ai bai u taimu tu cantinu ivalven."
His speech is incredibly bad but at least I can somewhat understand him. Since he chose to become a hobgoblin his possible evolution path had deteriorated and he finished evolving first. I'm sure he can work wonders for the situation outside.
More time passes since Gobi left but the battle doesn't abate. Next, Bonerattle begins to move. He now has two skulls floating around himself. He looks at me and lowers his jaw which is his way of smiling and leaves after giving me a thumbs up.
Since Bonerattle uses sound to fight I can hear him join the battle. It is frustrating to sit in this empty cave and know my friends, my family, and my comrades are fighting for their lives outside.
Finally, my evolution comes to an end. However, the sounds of battle outside have pretty much come to an end as well. My control over my body returns and I immediately leave the small cave I am in.
The sight outside devastates me.
Corpses litter the ground and most of them are from our side. The only one left fighting is uncle Gary.
However, there are countless cracks all over his body and his attacks are desperate. Those bastard adventurers are just playing with him. They easily dodge his attacks and lightly hit him from wherever he isn't looking.
I see Gobi's lifeless body being dismantled by a carrier. One of Bonerattle's skulls lies not far away with a deep crack straight down the middle of it.
Why?
Why would they do this?
And why wasn't I there to stop it?
