章 183: Winter returns (2)
That mace looks so cool!
The lightning arcs dancing around the mace seem to set off a chain reaction as the armor that has been wholly black before suddenly lights up with yellow symbols I can't decipher. As those symbols come to life the armor begins to hum. Just hearing that sound and looking at the armor makes me feel threatened.
"That's runic armor and one that is powered by lightning. No wonder few survive fighting those three."
"Why?"
"Elemental runic armored warriors are a special branch of the elemental armored warriors. Unlike the elemental heavy armored warrior class that is already considered a strong advanced class, the runic armored variant isn't even on the official list."
"There's a list?"
"Guy, how do you think we know which classes are advanced, special, or whatever? The government made a list with them and classifies them after some tests. However, most classes that are truly strong aren't on that list. Since they are strong though they are usually grouped up with the listed advanced classes. The sub-zero mage class is among the unlisted too."
"Should we be talking here like this?"
"It's fine. From the looks of it, baldy still needs some time to power up and Darwin is still expanding the space around them. They also can't hear us since I set up a one-way sound barrier."
"What do you mean by Darwin is expanding space?"
"Think about it. If Darwin and a bunch of level 200 adventurers seriously fight inside this place half the building will be obliterated and the rest will only remain standing due to our barriers. Letting such a thing happen would bring us huge losses not to mention it would put us out of business for a day or two.
"To keep that from happening Darwin is using space magic to expand the space around them. You can't see it but just this lobby is already tens of square kilometers in size. For a spell to reach the reception desk it will have to travel a few kilometers and will likely lose quite a bit of its destructive power."
"How does that even work? And why can't I see it?"
"It works through conversion. Say every centimeter suddenly equals a meter in its spatial properties. A step that could cross a meter within a second before can suddenly only get you ahead by one centimeter within the same time. As for why you can't see it... reality gets a bit funny when you use space magic of that level. It tries to maintain normalcy by falsifying our sensory inputs instead of letting us see the mess that is happening. The only way to tell what is happening is to have space magic at a high enough level or to notice that high-tier spells are breaking reality."
"Breaking reality?"
"You'll see in a moment, baldy is done charging."
That he is. The bald guy's armor is now humming like an engine and if you put out the lights now he would act as a perfect light bulb.
"I've always heard of your greatness, Darwin! But how great can a coward be who has retired and hides in his own company all day long? I'll kill you and drag your corpse out of this place to show people how pathetic you truly are."
I feel Navi tense up beside me. She looks like she wants to punch that guy in the face full force but holds back out of respect for Darwin.
Darwin himself doesn't seem to think much of the insult. He just stands there like a tall mountain waiting for the others to make a move.
"He's trying to have them attack first, isn't he?"
"As long as they attack first he can kill them and claim it was self-defense. We'll even get compensation for the damages and the trouble."
I keep a close eye on the bald guy making sure I don't miss anything but I still miss his first move. He suddenly disappears and appears a step closer to Darwin while looking shocked.
"He expanded space! Quickly, don't give him time to cast."
The warrior in blue shouts his findings out and immediately begins to charge. His running seems kind of slow but I assume that is because the distance he is crossing has expanded by so much. The other two warriors join the charge while brandishing their weapons and the mages begin to cast.
"Great frosty wasteland, descend upon our world with relentless frost and drown this place in swaths of ice crystals. Let the storm pick up and snow fall from all corners of the sky. Let the temperature drop without limits and reach unknown depths that freeze all life. Paint this world in shades of white and let it become a perpetual domain of ice and snow.
Blizzard tundra!"
"Tumultuous scorching hell, let thy blazes reach high and make cinders burn bright and hot. Flames shall cover all and turn my enemies into ashes. No spark will be extinguished all things will be set alight by my hellish flames. Let this world be submerged in an ocean of molten flame and bursting embers. The domain of punitive fire will brand this place where heat and light are all that is left. Inferno plane!"
From both mages, the magic begins to leak as they use an enormous amount of mp to cast their spells. Around lord winter a world of frost is quickly developing and considering that space there is expanded by a lot the movement speed of the ice and frost is scary.
A similar phenomenon begins to spread from the other mage but this one is dominated by flames instead of frost. Both areas increase rapidly and reach the backs of the running warriors.
The bald warrior in the middle quickly speeds up as if unwilling to enter the spell's area of effect. The other two allow the effects to wash over them without fear. Promptly it becomes apparent why.
