章 5: Hunter

I feel a little bad about skipping out on training for a date. Me and Iris have been going into the Pine Forest since we were thirteen years old and this was the first time either of us missed out on it. At least Iris was still out there right now testing her theory. If she really could find a way to control animals, it would be amazing. I don't think any Entrancer has ever even tried. Iris is just amazing in general, with her curly black hair, bronze-like skin and beautiful amber eyes...I lost my train of thought. Anyway...I walked down Nostrum Avenue to Cafe Bellum. Cafe Bellum is probably the nicest place I can afford on a fixed income. Most people in Caedis are poor and can't afford most things, so Cafe Bellum was as nice as it got. I walked into the Cafe and saw Gianna sitting at a table in the corner waiting for me. I walked over to her and sat down. Gianna had her wavy blonde hair in a side braid over her right shoulder and was wearing a slim dress that matched her piercing teal eyes. Her lips and eyes were painted a deep red and she wore a simple pair of teal earrings. Gianna's father is in charge of training the Gifted Army for the war, so she's incredibly rich. As soon as she saw me, a wide smile spread across her face and her eyes lit up, "Hi, Hunter! I'm soooo glad you showed up!"

I smiled awkwardly, "Have you been waiting here long?" She smiled again and twirled a lock of hair that had fallen out of her braid around her finger, "I got here early. I was just too excited! I've had a crush on you for like ever, and I can't believe you agreed to go out with me!" Her body shook with a loud(and kind of obnoxious) giggle. I looked away and muttered, "I can't believe it either."

"What did you say," she asked as she raised an eyebrow at me. I quickly recovered and blurted out, "Nothing! I didn't say anything." She didn't reply but she pursed her lips in suspicion. I was beginning to have doubts about this date. Gianna gestured at herself and asked, "Do you like my outfit? My scullery maid picked it out for me." Only the richest people can afford scullery maids. Scullery maids are the few Gifted who are injured in the war and come back alive. They're also the Gifted who are disabled and can't serve. They're treated like dirt and I don't approve of it. I'm really starting to hate this girl. I gritted my teeth and answered her question, "I do like it. It's nice." Then I started thinking about Iris and the fact that she's all alone in the forest. I can't do it anymore. I stood up from my chair, "I'm sorry, Gianna, I have to go. There's something important I have to do." I started to turn when Gianna's shocked expression suddenly turned into pure evil,"It's that girl isn't it?" I didn't admit to it but I also didn't deny it. I ran out of the Cafe and started down the road that went to Pine Forest.

I was about 30 feet from the clearing that me and Iris usually practice in when I started to hear voices. I heard one female voice that sounded like Iris but I also heard a male voice that appeared to be talking to her. I slowed my pace and softened my footsteps. I slowly approached the edge of the clearing and saw Iris talking to another boy about eighteen years old. He was tall and muscular with jet black hair and brown eyes. I looked more closely and saw that the pine tree behind Iris was frozen solid, which seemed odd. I started listening in on their conversation. The boy had a smirk on his face as he said, "I'm a Cryokinetic. I know what it's like to have to hide your true identity from everyone because if anyone were to find out who you really were they would send you off to the war. I know how you must feel, being told about a rebel organization by a random stranger. I was the same as you once, someone offered to help me, and I'm only standing here now because I accepted. I'm begging you to do the same." Iris seemed to think about this for a while then took a deep breath and said, "Okay. I'll go with you."

I was too stunned to think. So instead of thinking, I did the first thing I could think of, I threw a fire ball straight at them.

They both jumped out of the way. I took advantage of the boy's disoriented state and lunged right at him. I wrapped my arms around his waist and tackled him to the ground. We rolled on the ground for a few feet before coming to a stop. I got on top of him and summoned a small flame in my hand. I brought the flame closer to his face, but before I could use it to threaten him, I felt something cold strike my abdomen and send me flying backwards through the air. I landed in a heap. The boy walked over to me and pinned my hands and feet to the ground in shackles made of ice. I melted away the bonds and started to get to get in position for another attack when I suddenly stopped in my tracks. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't move. Iris slowly moved into my line of sight, her arms were outstretched and her face was contorted in concentration. Iris moved to stand next to the other boy. She started to speak, "I need you to listen to me Hunter. This is Calvin, he's a recruiter for a secret rebel group that protects the Gifted. He is not going to hurt either of us. When I let you go, you're not gonna do anything except stand there and listen, understand?" I reluctantly agreed. She lowered her hands and I finally regained control of my body. I started to speak, "How did you Entrance me without speaki-." She cut me off, "Not important right now. I need you to listen. Calvin is here to take us back to the rebel base. We were about to go look for you since you were off on that date." The one time I left her alone this had to happen. The thought just made me feel more guilty. Calvin started to say something, "There's something else, I'm afraid. We have a database that lists all of the Gifted in Caedis and it was recently hacked by the recruiting officers for the War. They know you guys are Gifted and they might be coming for you. If you don't come with me, you'll most likely be sent to the front. We're your best chance of survival." Me and Iris shared a look and we both decided, without ever saying a single word, that we were going to the rebel base together.
