The play started with the scene of the main character, the nobleman.
Lord Gilbert Willows an affluent and powerful person, known by all and feared by most. He had everything; the wealth, the influence, the appearance of undeniable beauty. But deep in his heart, he longed for something, love.
He was at the highest peak with no one to share his glory. He lived the life of luxury for the price of living his life with official duties. He was one of the ministers of the King.
Cailina crossed her arms and watched intently, never missing any detail of the stage. The furnishing, the clothes worn by the characters, and the acting displayed, left her to conclude that the play was well-prepared.
Her lips tugged in upwards, she saw one thing that all nobles carry as well as their attendants and close maids. A watch.
One could know if a person has a high status if he carried a watch.
She took out the pocket watch her father gifted. It has a simple design that showed the Grandis' family crest on its lid, with clear gems that outlined the carvings of the watch.
The play continued to unfold, and as the story progressed, Cailina's focus now only exist on the stage. She wanted to know what end would the unfortunate souls would have.
Lord Gilbert, known for his exploding temper, met his match when he was out for the day. He bumped into the woman dressed in ragged clothes, disheveled hair, and eyes that appeared they were weeping for days.
"Please, save me."
It was the line that tugged the Lord Gilbert's heart, seeing the tenderness of the woman's plea, he swore to take her in and give her work. There was something in her that he wanted to discover, protect, and cherish.
The days passed since they met, and the master and servant became closer. Erica respected Lord Gilbert with all her heart. She would observe from afar, waiting for her master to return after a tiring day.
Erica was the only servant that Lord Gilbert would give attention to. She became his companion during day and night. It was when Erica found true love, all her life she was raised to battle with different types of work.
It was the same routine that Erica had, until the moment that challenged her growing love. Gilbert's arranged marriage. It was to the daughter of a nobleman with a similar status as him.
Erica expressed her disapproval about the marriage, but Gilbert gave her the same answer every time she asked to cancel the arrangement. She gave Gilbert a choice to choose her or to never see her again.
He was enraged with what his lover said. He wanted to give her everything but cannot do so. Their status got in the way of their love; it was as if the world was against their relationship.
Cailina frowned. She wasn't pleased with the play, but her puppy's eyes were fixed on each scene that she endured the exchanges between the fiancée of Lord Gilbert and Erica.
If it were her, she would take care of the daring maid, Erica. She has no right to disrespect her master's future wife, for she would become Erica's master after the ceremony. She was only a moment of passing, they could never be together.
Cailina began to question why many enjoyed this kind of narration. It opposed the order of authority, but worrying over a trivial play won't contribute to anything in her life. She leaned back on her seat and watched in silence.
She grew tired of the petty dialogues of the characters, and the turning point arrived.
Despite the obvious opposition of Lord Gilbert's fiancée, he took Erica with him for a business trip. He reasoned that Erica was the only person he could trust with his work.
Cailina rolled her eyes at the foolish reason of Lord Gilbert. Any noble with a sound mind wouldn't trust a commoner when it comes to their private dealings as commoners tend to assume more than what they were given.
It was what her father taught her.
Their burning love became the greatest scandal in the kingdom. The nobles mocked Gilbert for falling for a commoner's seduction, and that he has lost his senses to consider a commoner to be his wife.
Even the King showed his displeasure at the forbidden love.
On the other hand, the commoners celebrated Erica as a hero, an example for them to dream. A living testament that they had a chance to have a life of a noble. They praised her names on the streets, told tales of her to their children.
The praises for Erica brought shame for Gilbert's fiancée, Sabriah. She was laughed at by her peers, looked down upon as she has yet to be married, but couldn't keep her husband to be.
The never-ending mockery that she received made her crueler at Erica.
She made her life a miserable one, and the only time that Erica was free from her grasp was when Gilbert would come home. Sabriah grabbed every opportunity to change Erica's view about nobility.
It was not a place for a being who let their emotions rule.
Cailina felt pity for the fiancée. The marriage would benefit both families, but Gilbert decided to abandon his first duty; his family. Although the play did not focus on his parents, they were in for a few scenes in which both of them showed disapproval at Erica.
They were reasonable. A commoner and a noble's love would never work.
The audience remained silent as they watched, no one dared to make a sound as the scenes became more intense. Cailina commended the actors and actress in her heart, they played their part as if they were them.
Cailina looked at Lai who sat behind her and saw that his attendant seemed to enjoy the play too, along with Fione. She furrowed her brows at her maid's apparent joy about the story.
Disinterested, she played with her ring and a scream caught her attention.
