...
Midnight, Provincial Hospital, Kor City
Inside a private room with the number 227 on the door, a figure can be seen calmly sitting on the side of the bed while carefully checking the weak-looking woman lying on it and monitoring her vitals.
It had already been hours since he started checking and writing down the results of his checkup on her condition.
The two men who are watching have their foreheads creased as they are a bit confused about what the young man is doing. His actions seem a bit weird because it is not the common way a doctor checks up on a patient. He would sometimes use the needle in his hand which he got from Doctor Gale who was standing at the side, and he would use this to prick her skin every once in a while.
But the woman would not react as if not feeling the penetration of the needle on her skin.
Then after a long while...
"Okay, okay… I think I can get an accurate prescription for her case. Luckily, we can still make it on time. But she has to take the medicine this week. I think the disease will be evolving to its last stages after 5 days." Curt Nilfiem said as he closed the notebook that was given to him by Doctor Gale and gave back the pen to the husband of the woman.
"Wait… you mean we can cure her condition with just medication?" suddenly Doctor Gale asked with confusion and doubt on his face.
He has been a doctor for many years and has done his research on cancer patients. And he is aware of the difficulty of Mrs. Nancy Lim's case. Many specialists have also checked her and only have around 10% chance of success and that is through surgery and chemotherapy. So how can he not be surprised by what Curt is saying?
Curt once again opened the small notebook and gestured to borrow the pen once again.
He knew that Doctor Gale was a bit skeptical. Although he didn't want to prove anything, he could not control himself in this aspect. He truly wanted to help the woman with eagerness in his heart. It's like an itch in his heart that he cannot scratch.
And so he wrote down some compounded and synthetic medicines, plus he also added some of the supposed herbs that he also needed.
In his time foraging along the border near the dome wall, he had already seen some herbs with medicinal properties, and somewhat this knowledge combined with the knowledge in his mind and a new kind of learning magically appeared.
So, with this knowledge in mind, he had already identified the needed herbs to use along with the synthetic medicine available that he needed to make or extract.
After handing the piece of paper to Doctor Gale, Curt gave the woman a confident smile.
"You don't have to be too down anymore. I can assure you that as long as you take these medicines, either through your IV drip or by intake, your condition will improve little by little."
"Curt, what is this? I can understand and know some of them, but how about the rest? I mean… are these herbs?" Doctor Gales asked in confusion.
"Yes, but you don't have to worry. I will get these herbs tomorrow by myself… the important thing is we have to stop the cancer cells first."
"And how should we go about that? Wait… Don't tell me you are going to compound a new medicine?" Doctor Gale suddenly said with his eyes wide open.
He suddenly drags Curt to the side away from the couple.
"Are you crazy? If you develop a new medicine, a human trial will not be permitted until the government agrees with it," Doctor Gale said in a low voice.
"Oh, I see… but… if we wait that long. She will not make it." Curt replied.
"Hmm… how confident are you that the medicine will be effective?"
"Well, if I can gather enough materials and can extract enough synthetic medicine, then around 99%."
When Curt gave his answer, Doctor Gale gave him an incredulous look on his face… 99%? It's like saying that Curt is confident in his medical skills and the prescription.
Doctor Gale right now is truly tempted to agree. This is because, although he is a doctor and is bound by the code and conduct of a medical practitioner, he is still a normal human being. He also dreams of being able to participate in something grand like making a cure for cancer.
"Wait… before we proceed, I have to ask permission first." He said as he took out his phone and quickly dialed a number.
Meanwhile, Curt walked towards the woman and noticed her pale complexion. He was so engrossed in finding the disease and its cure that he forgot to improve his current physical state.
"Oh… I forgot that you are still in pain. I am sorry… I was too concentrated on thinking of a cure. Anyway, I will just insert some needles, and after this, you will not feel any pain anymore, I promise. However, I will just remind you that this is only temporary, okay?" Curt said as he once again took out the remaining needles inside the small box.
Curt then began to insert the needles into some of her vital acupoints for pain management and for her rampaging cells to be manageable for a while.
"I will now make your body try to manage the pain and your cancer cells to be controllable for a day. This will be your feeling after taking the medicine that we will make for you. Now, I want you to relax for a bit, you will feel a strange feeling in your body, but you should not be alarmed, okay?"
The woman nods her head as her husband walks to her side and holds her hand.
When Curt began to insert the needles, the woman suddenly gripped her husband's hand a little tight as she could feel a strange sensation inside of her body.
She then suddenly showed a pained expression, but no words escaped her mouth. The room was silent as Curt continued to insert the remaining needles. After 30 minutes, one can see large beads of sweat on his forehead, and his back is also already drenched in sweat.
It took him around an hour before he stopped and heaved a heavy sigh.
"Luckily there were enough needles. Hehe… How do you feel now?" Curt asked while wiping the sweat on his forehead using his sleeves.
"I'm… I'm feeling good. I… I don't feel any pain anymore." She said with a shocked look on her expression.
One can already see her weak and pale complexion a while ago is already gone and is replaced by a healthy glow on her face.
Curt then removed the needles and after removing the last one, he immediately tried to grab the chair's handrest, which was in the corner, but failed to do so and fell on the floor.
Thud!
The people in the room were surprised at his weak-looking expression.
"What… what happened doctor?" Mr. Jinxiao Lim asked with a worried look.
Curt just waves his hand and drags himself to sit on the chair.
"Hehe… that was a bit embarrassing. Anyway, hopefully, tomorrow we can get the prescription ready. If not, then your condition will relapse tomorrow evening, and it will be more painful than usual." Curt warned.
When Doctor Gale heard Curt's words, his expression changed and turned a bit pensive. The reason for this is that he was not permitted to create the prescription. His superior just told him that he was too impulsive and arrogant. He was even scolded for not knowing his boundaries. Hence, he was a bit confused and worried about what to do.
But when his gaze turns to Curt, a strange confidence swells up in his heart. Something is telling him to trust the young man and everything will be fine.
Doctor Gale has always trusted his hunch and his instinct when it comes to healing his patients. And so far in his years as a doctor, he was well-known within his circle to have this kind of ability. And his colleagues trusted him for this.
Even his seniors would secretly approach him when they were confronted with a difficult task and would ask for his opinion after giving him the needed data of a patient. And after following his suggested hunch on treatment, they would never go wrong.
And this is the reason why he got the nickname, Doctor Luck.
And right now, his hunch is telling him what to do. However, it is against the policy of the hospital and even the code of medicine that he learned in school. But right at this moment, one can see the determination in his eyes as if he has already made his choice.
And so, with a determined heart and a clenched fist, Doctor Gale walked towards Curt, who was resting on the chair. When he looked at the simple-looking young man, he could not help but show a deliberating look on his face.
Who would have guessed that this young man who is just a part-time worker in a convenience store would have great medical knowledge that is outside this world? In fact, who would have thought that the store that sells ordinary items would also be selling something extraordinary and out of this world's items that cannot be seen anywhere else?
But he is just grateful that he has met such a young man. And today, they are going to make history. They are going to prove that not everyone who does not have an Esper power is lower than those who wield such power.
He knew that if they succeeded. Though he would face serious scolding, criticism, and repercussions, he would not back down and would continue, and follow his hunch. And with a firm heart, he looked in front of Curt and looked at the young man in the eyes and said,
"Let's do it… Let's make the medicine."
