Five hours later, the Humvee and one pickup arrive at our station.
I know that I said to hurry up, but I didn't think that they will bring half of our people. The pickup is filled with things while the Humvee was full of people.
Let's see, Paul and Lee brought back one soldier, Lily, Kenny, Brian, Jon, and Ellen. While Andrew, Sonia (Andrew's wife), Gale, Larry, the kids (Clementine and Duck), Katjaa, Doug, Carley, and the other two soldiers (one copilot) will arrive with the other transport after we clear the next station.
Approaching the cars, I can see that Paul was waiting for me.
Paul: Morning, heard you got beaten by the new one?
Eric: Yeah, it almost killed us, if not for your brother's invention.
Paul: His idea saved you, huh? Well glad to hear that. Found a way to charge it?
Eric: Unfortunately, I didn't find one yet.
Paul: Figures, Andrew made something for you.
Paul led me to the back of the pickup and showed me a battery charger.
Paul: He modified this battery charger. You can charge your weapon here if you connect the charger to electricity. You just need to place the metal hooks on the ax and when the battery inside the ax will be charged it will show a green light. As you already know, you can only use the electricity attack once.
Eric: Thanks, I know, but one time is enough to save my life. Can he make the battery last longer?
Paul: Don't think so. It will make the weapon heavier which will make it useless in combat. Plus the fact that to add a battery that can hold that kind of power will have to be a pretty big battery which will also make the weapon useless in combat. Now you see why you can't build it with more charges?
Eric: Yeah, thanks for explaining this to me. Now let's gather the team we have a dead zombie to retrieve.
Paul: I heard that we have two new members. Officers from what Ace told me.
Eric: Yes, Ace saved them last night. They seem to be good, but we can't be sure anymore, right?
Paul: Unfortunately, you are right. After the apocalypse, people will do anything to survive.
Eric: That's how human works right. We thought that we were the top dogs only to be hit by reality.
Paul: That's true. Say, do you guys found something about the new zombies?
Eric: Other than the fact that they are more dangerous than a normal zombie?
Paul: You said that they retreat when you burned one of them. So, we thought that maybe they are afraid of natural light.
Eric: I don't think that they are afraid of fire. If it's true, that will be wonderful, but I'm sure that they have another weakness.
Just as I was about to continue my sentence, Brian's voice was heard.
Brian: Hey, Eric, glad to see you alive.
Eric: Hey. Glad to see that you are alive as well.
Brian: What are two doing here?
Eric: Paul asked me how I killed the new zombie.
Brian: With fire right?
Eric: Yeah, but we think that they may have another weakness. Paul thinks that maybe natural light may be the answer.
Brian: Well, the fire can be natural and man-made. Most of the living things are afraid of fire. Of course, the zombies don't feel anything, but they will die from it. Now, for the new type, they may be a little bit more intelligent than the normal zombie which helps them to see the fire as a danger. As you said the fire scared them, but I didn't saw any new zombie in broad daylight. I saw one last night. Unfortunately for him, I shot him with a .50 caliber rifle. His head didn't stand a chance. Now, this is just a speculation, but maybe they are afraid of UV rays that the sun creates or even powerful lights. Once again this is just a speculation.
Paul: Kid, you are a genius. We should try this method to see if it works. Even if it didn't works, we can deal with them.
Eric: We don't have any UV lights here, but we have the train. The headlights on it should be strong enough.
Paul: The train work?
Eric: Ace got the train to work, at least that's what he said.
Brian: Train headlights, it may work.
Eric: I'll get Ace to bring the train, inform the rest of the people about our plan.
After another hour, we gather in front of the gate ready to fight the zombies on the other side. Ace brought the train near the gate, I told him to turn off the light for now. He will turn them back on when we open the gate.
I'm nervous, this will be the first time we will fight a foe stronger than us and if our plan somehow fails, people will die. I looked around me and I see that all of my people have the same face. It didn't matter how good you are or how strong you are, one slight mistake can cost you your life, and all of the people here know that.
I tasked Ellen with the gate controls, as she wasn't a fighter and to protect her from any harm. She knows that her job was as important as ours, the same can be told about our lives.
Eric: Ellen… open the gate. Ace, be ready to turn on the headlights.
When my last word was heard, Ellen switched the gate to open. Slowly the huge metallic gate opens. The gate was thick enough to block the sound from being heard from one side to the other one, so, we didn't hear the growls coming from the other side until now. As the gate was opening, we begin to hear many growls, and sometimes the noises the new type makes.
I'm sure that these freaks will storm us at any moment. Just when the gate has finish opening, seven figures dashed from the darkness towards us.
We didn't except this situation, I know that they are fast, but not this fast. Without people caught off guard, the zombies got the advantage.
Seeing that they are too close to us, I yelled at Ace.
Eric: THE HEADLIGHTS!
Ace: IT WON" T TURN ON.FUCKING MACHINE!
Now that they have the advantage of being close enough to attack us, three freaks pounced onto the soldier. In just ten seconds the poor man got himself killed.
Another freak managed to tackle Jon to the ground. Fortunately for him, Brian and Kenny were close enough to kill the freak by stabbing his head with a spear and a knife.
Just as the freaks were about to pounce on another survivor, Ace managed to turn on the headlights.
Ace: BURN MOTHERFUCKERS! BURN!
When the light from the headlights hit the freaks, they begin screaming and running for their lives. I won't give them any chance of escaping this fight.
Eric: FIRE, KILL THEM ALL.
As I yelled my order, the rifle that I had in my hands was heard and immediately after that all of the people that survived the attack fired back at the retreating freaks. Ten meters from the gate, four freaks died due to our guns, but two of them managed to retreat at a safe distance behind a corner.
Eric: Ace, we will follow them. Paul stabs the sergeant in the head. We don't want a zombie appearing behind us.
Paul nodded at my words and quickly stabbed the dead sergeant in the head. With the dead man dealt, we follow the tunnel to the next station.
As the train advanced, we managed to catch up with the two freaks, and just as we saw them, we fired. In the first twenty seconds, both of them hit the trails and the train sliced them in many parts.
After three more minutes, we meet the rest of the lair, as I named the place where a large group of zombies is found.
The train smashed any zombies that were on the tracks before it stops right in the middle of the station. I was the first one to jump out of the train. My ax was in my right arm while with the left one, I held the ballistic shield.
One zombie was so unlucky, because I landed, with my shield under my feet, right on top of him, killing the zombie instantly. Picking my shield back up, I was greeted by a zombie that tried to bite, unfortunately for him, Lee saw the zombie and shot it with his rifle, saving my ass in the process.
Nodding at him, I raised my shield and start killing zombies that tried to bite me.
Jon, Ace, and Brian were on the train, shoot any zombie that tried to attack any survivor from the sides of sometimes from behind, and just like this, in just fifteen minutes we cleared the whole station of any sign of undead.
When the last zombie hit the floor, I let my exhaustion take control of my body. Without any energy left, my body falls on the ground. I know that I went overboard, but we lost one man today and the anger got the better of me.
Seeing me on the floor, Jon and Paul approach me. Both of them help me get back up and got my exhausted body on the train. They knew the way I was in this situation and decided to comfort me as best they can. Both of them put a hand on my shoulders before they talk.
Jon: War never changes. Don't let the dead of the sergeant eat you. Stay alive and live your life for every dead man or woman you have or will kill. Regret is the worse pain you get from seeing your friend die in front of your eyes. Think about what I told you.
Paul: He was a good man. Don't let his death affect you. You are our leader, the people need hope and only you can give them that. Don't destroy yourself over the death of a man that was ready to die for you. Live your life and fight for the people that are still alive. Rest now. You need it.
