章 27: CHPT 27: Mystery Man

Claude and Ursula sat in comfortable silence until he broke it with a question that had been on his mind for a while.

"Who were you so determined to get to that it triggered your Rebirth?"

Ursula seemed to physically shy away from the question as if she didn't want to answer. Claude was becoming increasingly more intrigued as he waited for her to tell him who this mystery individual was.

"I was trying to get to your room, obviously." She answered with a confused expression.

"W-what why?"

"Well, I heard you had only one visitor and he left. I thought the least I could do was not let you be alone. Besides, I'm the reason you were in the infirmary in the first place."

Claude felt his body heat up in agitation. Someone who just might be his first friend felt at fault for his injuries. Claude felt an intense need to remind her that none of it was her fault.

"I thought we talked about this. We're heroes Ursula...well maybe not heroes, but heroes in training! That means I'm going to save you and anyone else I can if I get the chance..and I know you'll do the same. Also, you seem to forget....we both were hurt in that battle. It's that fat ass snake's fault."

Ursula stared at Claude as she seriously considered his words. "Heroes..." she muttered, still finding it so odd that she wasn't used to the term.

Their conversation was interrupted by the mess hall doors swinging open. The people Claude met when he entered the portal all flooded the mess hall— intimidating everyone in the process with their unspoken strength. They formed two lines by the door and stood there with their arms down and chests out.

"Are they waiting for something?" Students began to ask as they watched the odd occurrence.

Soon enough a man that could only be the one who runs the University of the Phoenix entered the doorway. The dominating impression he left seemed to demand silence and attention from everyone.

His long and lively brown hair was held back with a hairband making it fall around his head and down his back like an illustrious lions mane. He was dressed in a deep navy blue robe that hugged his dense muscled frame and fell down to his ankles. He walked through the doorway— poised and seeming to focus on every student without even looking at them.

Every time he passed one of the assumed professors they followed in his wake until they were all headed to the farthest end of the mess hall in a straight line...which was right where Claude was.

Claude threw Ursula a confused look trying to ask her what's happening without speaking.

Ursula raised her shoulders since she was equally as confused as the rest of the students.

The 12 assumed professors followed the overwhelming and intimidating man to the furthest end of the mess hall. Claude listened to them walk deeper into the completely silent mess hall, he noticed the collective sounds of footsteps was off as if some people weren't actually there.

"Those must be assassins." He thought as he noticed at least 2 people in the line didn't make noise as they silently stepped toward his table in their ghost like silence.

Once they reached their destination— about 10 feet from Claudes table, the professors split so there were 6 on each side of the leading man. After a few seconds of silence a short and stocky man on the left began saying something Claude couldn't hear, the man then raised his hand and it began to glow a light brown and yellow as the ground rose.

"W-what the?" Claude said as the mess halls silence was interrupted by students gasping and the rocky grumbling sound the ground made as it formed a sort of podium for the professors and their leader.

Claude couldn't help but think about how natural the man looked at the center of the podium looking down at everyone, nobody even spared a glance at the 12 other people, this mans power was just too immense. He felt that if he took his eyes off of him he'd be putting himself in serious danger and that's probably how everyone else in the room felt.

"Erhm...Erhm."

The man grunted and students all over the room flinched. Claude felt his cheeks redden as he saw Prof. Brennan on the right laughing quietly.

The mans bearded face formed a light smile as he glanced at Prof. Brennan as if this was an ongoing inside joke between the two.

"I'm sorry for everyone's discomfort, but I cannot turn off the affect I have on people. It will happen to you all eventually if you get strong enough. Anyway, I'm the one in charge here, you can call me Headmaster(H.M.) Alaric. Since you've all read the Letter of the Phoenix I don't think I have to explain much right away except that I hope your ready. I hope your ready to train until you puke, to read until your head throbs and to fight like your life depends on it, Because this is the final step you take before becoming Tangent Heroes, so give it everything you got. I'm glad so many students could make it on the first day. Also, the upperclassmen will be around after your dismissed from the mess hall, don't be afraid to ask for directions or questions, I'm sure they'd be happy to help. Now, I'll let the Professors and Guards introduce themselves." He said in a deep and throaty voice that sounded damaged from continuous yelling.

"I'm Prof. Carlina and I assist students in the Aura/Elements class who have an affinity with wind, I'm very excited to work with you all." The short and cheery Professor on the far right said, seeming to calm everyone with her cheery attitude. They continued to introduce themselves from right to left.

"It's nice to meet you all, I'm Prof. Demetria and I work in the Aura/Elements class with students who have an affinity for ice." The tall and lean woman said in a thick Slavic accent.

"Hello everyone, I'm the leading Guard stationed in the west wing along with; Gabriel at north and Thomas and Alec at East . Also I go by James." The battle hardened guard said as he introduced the rest of the men on the right side of the Headmaster.

Claudes eyes fell on the last man on the left side and he immediately lost focus of the rest of the Professors as they announced themselves. Unlike the other Professors who looked straight ahead like soldiers, this man was searching the room intensely, as if he was looking for someone. His appearance set Claude off, his clothes hung loosely on his gangly figure and his long black hair looked oily and unwashed. Sometimes the mans nostrils would flare as if he was trying to smell for something.

"Is he a Beast Tamer? Are there even animals around that he could borrow traits from?" Claude wondered as he became increasingly more uncomfortable of the disheveled man.

Claude watched as the man seemed to get a burst of excitement once his eyes fell on a student behind Claude. He followed his gaze and realized the man was staring intently at Samuel who wasn't even paying attention.

Claude turned back to face the man who was practically drooling over Samuel a few seconds ago, only to find out the man was now aiming his chaotic light brown eyes at him with a wolffish grin plastered on his sunken face.
