章 19: Books

Arthur looked at the book in his hand and looked at the prompt from the decomposition machine.

For some time, he was transfixed.

He could disintegrate books?

- How come I didn't know? -

(E: I can't even try to make him look less stupid...)

He was elated. Just think of the possibilities of what he could do !!!

At first, Arthur had only tried to break down weapons. Later, in an accident, he realized that clothes could be broken down as. Well, clothes can be considered as a kind of equipment... but what about books? Are they Equipment as well?

The book as very thick. Just like a brick.

- Just smashing the book onto someone's head can give them a concussion like blunt weapons! So that's why it can be used in the system! -

- Anyway, just what can I get from this book?- He was very interested...

( E: What can a book give him? ( ͡° ʖ̯ ͡°) . I feel pity for the stupidity of the author and what his Chinese readers would be like. This was written just like Dora the Explorer. Maybe it is a fan-fic for kids under 12?)

He turned to look at Erskine.

- If his book disappeared, would he be angry? -

"Aha! Here you are, my missing neutrino!"

Arthur was startled. The doctor had probably solved something.

- It's probably best not to try it here...-

" Doctor, Can I go out for a bit? ", he probably shouldn't leave him alone, right?

" Sure. This place is protected. So you don't have to worry about me in here. "

" Oh yes, I forgot. Your room is next to this room. You only need to protect me when I am travelling alone. There's a spare key in that drawer. "

Arthur was relieved. This job was easier than he thought. He turned to look at the doctor and it seemed that he had immersed himself in his work.

Opening the drawer, he took out a key and left the room.

First he checked out his own room. It was no different than the other room, just not as messy as the other.

After putting his backpack down, he sorted them out a little, and finally put the gun in the holster hidden under his jacket. Then he left.

Where?

The Bookstore!

There was a bookstore-cum-library here, not far from where he lived. The storefront was not very big, but if you stepped inside, you will find yourself lost in these shelves!

It was empty when he came in. After all, it was a war period, and the bookstore being able to open its door for business already very good.

The owner was a young man in his twenties leaning on the counter, absent-minded. He didn't even look at Art when he came in.

Neither did Arthur care for him as long as he was not kicked out. He walked into a dead corner, where he couldn't be seen and picked up a book.

It really works! He calmed himself down. Books disappearing out of nowhere will obviously alert the cashier and maybe even reported. Also he had a warriors image to keep. He cannot steal, that what his daddy taught him...

Let's see. Once the Super Serum Experiment is successful, Dr. Erskine will definitely be targeted by Hydra. And since he was charged with protecting him, he will definitely be implicated.

He didn't like it... There are so many birds in the sky, what must he be shot down...

However, there was a bug here. And it was him! He was not constrained to follow the plot. So what if he started changing it?

He touched his chin and thought about it.

Half an hour later, he had bought all the books on genetics and anything related that he could find in the bookstore.

He had failed all his biology classes. So he couldn't understand even the synopsis.

But if the system could help him, it may be necessary to know about it. He only needed to put the books in his system and learn about it.

There were all kinds of categories, but not too many books. What he had bought was everything the store had to offer. But it was too expensive to buy. He had nearly finished all the money given by his daddy.

It was okay to rent, but too expensive to buy!

Knowledge was priceless? Well my wallet seems to disagree!

After he left the bookstore, he found an alley, hidden from others, and put everything into his space. Only two books were left in his hand.

There might be a problem though. Nowadays, if someone published a paper, there will be people agreeing to it. This age was not that technologically advanced to verify said person's claims right away. There had to be countless discussions and whatnot. So there was always a probability that the book he held in his hand was not accurate. The system will probably filter it, right?

Hmm... If a soldier suddenly starts writing papers on genetics, it will definitely be weird. So he need some proper reason to protect his secret. He needed a teacher, who took notice of his ' talent ', and took him as a student.

As for his teacher? He already had the best candidate in his mind.

章 20: Genius

Back in his room, Arthur felt a little excited. Much like that moment when he invaded the enemy camp.

The same shudder, the same chill passing through his body... Well, it seems that he needed to pee!

.

.

.

Out of the bathroom, his emotions were back to normal. (E: What kind of emotional breakthrough do people go while urinating? Someone, please tell me. It may be a culture thing? A pun?)

He had changed. From a simple-minded person, he had become what he was now. A person with blood in his hands does change something in them.

He clenched his fists, his mind was still alert from all the danger that he had yet to face.

The familiar clicks of the gears could be heard in his mind. Calming his mind. It was the only 'real' link to his past.

And to be honest, it did help him out a lot.

[Alert!]

[DO YOU WANT TO EXTRACT? Y|N]

"Yes!"

A book, same as the previous ones, appeared before him.

Reaching out to the book, it turned into lights, shooting straight into his mind, filling it with foreign knowledge available for him to use at any time he wanted.

"It really works!"(E: I'm kinda jealous, tbh)

Arthur's eyes were shining. If he had this in his last life, he could have been whatever he wanted to!

He looked at the rest of the books and continued putting them into the system.

He noticed something interesting.

First, every book was classified as an 'item' rather than equipment. Second, regardless of whether the book was new or old, the System EXP always increased by 1!

What was the difference between items and equipment?

His tiny brain couldn't find all the questions, not to mention guess at the answer. He didn't need to anyway. He just needed to enjoy the benefits.

To him, it didn't make sense to waste time thinking about such questions.

After disintegration, he had acquired 12 Genetic Knowledge booklets.

After all the absorption, Arthur could not tell what level he had reached. At least his system did not mention it.

Anyway, the information packets he absorbed seemed to be overflowing, he felt like a professor who had the answers to all the questions you could throw at him.

"Well, this may be an illusion, like all the protagonists felt whenever they had a power boost"

While thinking, he suddenly remembered that there were some documents scattered in Dr. Erskine's room.

You must remember that while Arthur was a numbskull, his memory (or rather mental strength) had been improved by the War Souls.

He tried remembering it. There seemed to be some theoretical parameters, probably for some organism. Recalling some of the genetic equations, he started writing it down on a piece of paper. He tried figuring it out with all the knowledge he had just gained till he fell face down on his paper.

Such workout was too much for him, so his brain shut him down.

He slept heavily. Cut off from his surroundings. He was tired. It had been hard to find a place that calmed down his nerves, secured behind the walls.

.

.

.

He didn't remember that there was one more person in the house. So when he woke up, he found a man, standing by the night stand, holding two sheets of papers, reading them carefully.

- Shit -

Arthur was astonished! Not good!

Dr. Erskine!

- What was the old man doing here at such early hours? Shouldn't he be sleeping? -

-And... Isn't that what I was writing yesterday?-

- I'm finished! I just doodled the related stuff on that paper! I haven't even written it properly! What would I do???-

Arthur was secretly peeking at the doctor.

He had initially wanted to portray himself as a genius by 'accidentally' leaving his paper in the doctor's study, to let him find the 'treasure of knowledge' , and discover this handsome genius who had mastered genetics out of boredom!

Now? He might be reprimanded for representing his knowledge in an inappropriate manner. (his cartoonish characters with those bubble speeches mentioning ideas in passing - doodles)

As he was panicking internally, Dr. Erskine finally looked at him.

" I did knock on the door..."

"Ah, it's nothing... Doctor, you get up really early."

Arthur was really hoping that the doctor wouldd forgets his little 'graffiti' ....

"Is this what you wrote?"

Dr. Erskine did not let it go at all, pointing at the papers in his hand.

"That... That was just something that I studied by myself in passing for fun. Haha...."

"Really? By yourself?"

Dr. Erskine sighed: "Colonel Phillips has a rather unfair opinion about you. In his words, you are a problematic child, even psychotic, somewhat cynical after the death of your parents. But it seems that there is more to be uncovered... You are not only brave in the battlefield, but even your thirst for knowledge is endless. And... you are too humble!"

Dr. Erskine came to his side, sat down and continued: "It's rather surprising! I did not think that you were actually interested in this area and achieving this through self-study? In fact, even calling you a genius would be an understatement!!!"

- I'm a genius? -

"Yes, even if a person studies this field for 10 years, he may not be able to learn as much as you did."

Dr. Erskine said with a little excitement: "And you... what did you say again? Just for fun? I never thought I'd meet a child like you!"
