'What do we do with her?' I asked gesturing at Gati. She hadn't regained her senses and to be honest I preferred her like that, harmless and quiet. 'You know, she's not going to break if you leave her on the ground.'
Dave muffled his grin and gently released her onto the ground. He then walked to where Kutz and Jack were lying and squatted down on the ground. He checked his pulse to make sure that he was dead and then said, 'We have to dispose of his body as well as that of Jack. He picked up his phone and called someone. I just heard the other side of the conversation.
'Yes, in one of the guesthouses and in the forest. I'll send you the coordinates.'
He completed his call and said, 'Gati has not begun her full transitioning. We have to reverse the process. We don't need another Vetala on our hands.'
'Can we do that?' He must have heard the hopeful tone in my voice as he asked, 'You don't like being a vampire?' His question actually got me thinking. Everything had happened so quickly that I hadn't had the time to digest the news that I was officially a vampire. But it was still not the time to do so. 'It can't be reversed for all vampires. Gati was bitten probably between 24-48 hours ago,' he said assessing the marks on her neck. 'For her, it can be done.' He then picked her up in his hands and led the way to where he had parked his car. I followed him quietly, feeling ridiculous at the jealousy that was blooming in my heart once again. He put her in the backseat and then we were headed to Claudia's house.
'Ash, you here?' Claudia asked me, reminding me that I had still not disconnected the call.
'Yes, Claudia, we're coming to your house with the special guest,' I replied.
'Good. Mum is here.'
We drove in silence , but I kept checking on Gati in the backseat who was groaning from time to time.
'Ash, I'm so glad you're safe,' Tania, Claudia's mother, exclaimed as she saw me step out of the car. The garage door was closing behind us and she rushed to give me a hug. I had always been quite close to her and I spent a lot of time over at her house.
Mr Pierce was still here and it felt awkward to greet him in such a casual setting.
'Hi, Mr Pierce,' I said.
'Lucas, please,' he told me.
He reached past me to keep the door open for Dave who had picked Gati in his arms.
'Bring her to my room,' Tania said and led the way for Dave to follow her. 'We'll have to reverse the process,' he told her. 'You still remember how to?'
'We'll find out soon enough,' was her reply before they both disappeared in the room.
I turned to Claudia and Lucas and they both looked just as confused as me. Apparently, our help was not required.
'What happened to Christian?' I finally asked Claudia, coming to the living room.
'Were you the ones to tie him up?' she asked me and I nodded. 'You can't imagine the shock we felt when we dropped Nadia home and found him in this condition. They have decided to leave town.'
I yawned and agreed. It was best for them to leave and safer as well, given that Guy was free to roam around.
'Why don't you go to my room and rest, Ash? You must be tired. Lucas and I will wait for them to be done.' I wanted to say no, but another yawn escaped and I knew I needed to rest. I went to her room, took off my shoes and pants and lied down on her bed in just my shirt and panties. I was asleep soon after.
I slept like a log. When I woke up, light was streaming in through the curtains and my watch read 7 o'clock. Dave was sitting on the edge of the bed, going through his phone. He noticed my movement and turned to me with a smile.
'Slept well?'
Surprisingly, I had. I had thought that my sleep would be rife with nightmares but that was luckily not the case.
'Claudia told me to inform you that you can choose any outfit from her wardrobe. She left early to help Lucas at the Academy.'
I abruptly came back to reality, when I recalled that I did not have a house anymore, I did not have any clothes. Nothing was left. All my certificates, memories, everything burned up in the fire. I just had the clothes I had been wearing on that day, my wallet with my cards and my phone. I would need to start everything from scratch and that started with a new wardrobe. However, I couldn't muster any excitement about shopping. Had it been a regular day, it would have brought me so much happiness, but now it was different. I didn't want to face the day.
I turned on to my belly and covered my head with my pillow.
'I'm not here,' I mumbled. Dave took the pillow away from my hands and turned me around.
'I know it will be hard, Ash, but you are strong.'
'Tell me, how does one start afresh? I don't have a place to live, I don't have clothes to wear.'
'Come with me to Bhuvar. You need a break and I'll be able to help you there. See it as a holiday. As it is, it's the last day of school today,' Dave told me convincingly.
It sounded very inviting and as it is, there was nothing for me to do here. Guy was hiding somewhere, probably to heal, the Vetala was biding his time, and Gati...'
'What happened to Gati by the way?' I asked, pushing the blanket aside and rolling out of bed. Silence met my question and I turned to find Dave, with a curious little smile on his lips staring at me. I looked down at myself and realized that I was naked down the waist except for the little thong I had taken from Claudia. I quickly grabbed my pants which were lying on the floor and put it on quickly. I didn't know why I still felt self-conscious given all the intimate activities Dave and I had already engaged in.
Dave merely laughed at me, not averting his eyes at all and watching me struggle to pull them up.
'So, you'll come?' he asked me, now completely serious, and looking at him I realized that I wanted to go. The passageway was not going anywhere and my students wouldn't be needing me for a few weeks. I wondered what was waiting for me over there in Bhuvar.
