"But be warned. The bigger the household the more problems and difficulties it has. Once you leave this farmstead you can't come back. It is my rule. Once you are gone, don't come back. If, just if you come back. At that time the only job is to literally work as simple help on the farm. Nothing more than that. Is your wish to leave still strong?"
The young girl nodded. "Yes, miss."
"Good. Tomorrow will this carriage be sent back to the city. Mingli will find you a transportation to the south. Stay here tonight." She saw the girl bowing and waved her hand. "Go rest. You come with me. We will write a contract right away."
She goes politely and nodded. "Yes, miss."
In front of the house, Mingli waved his hand to two servants and ordered. "Prepare warm water for a bath. She will need to take a bath before sleep. Miss food is ready. As usual, light porridge?"
Shu Ya nodded. "Yes."
Mingli opened the door of a big house and warmth hit her cold body. "Nice, warm."
He reported as she sat down. "Miss, in my way here I heard there are no trees and by chance found people that are selling heating coal. I brought ten wagons filled with coal. It will be enough to heat all the rooms for the whole year."
Shu Ya saw a big table and went there. "Bring me a pen, ink and papers." She adjusted light nearby and as soon Mingli put it on the table she used their contract to copy and needed just her name. "Your name?"
"Rouxi miss." She calmly waited and then sighed town and added even fingerprint on it like a seal. She stepped back and saw Shu Ya adding her own signature.
"Rouxi, from today you are my servant. I don't know how familiar are you with the girl that will leave, but from now on she is just a stranger and she will be treated as one." Shy Ya's words were clear.
Rouxi nodded. "Yes, miss."
Shu Ya waved her hand. "Tomorrow or day after we will go back to the city to get you a couple of sets of clothes." But Ruoxi shook her head.
"Miss, our mistress was good to us and made many sets. I literally have seven new winter sets and five new summer sets." She waved her hand as she explained.
Shu Ya nodded. "What about coats, warm shoes? "
Rouxi sighed. "That, I wouldn't mind to gave more. They break so easily."
"Break?" She stared at Mingli, but he shook his head.
"Miss, she came in straw shoes." He pointed at the shoes outside.
She was completely flabbergasted. "What? She bought you warm clothes but let you walk in straw shoes. This..."
Rouxi didn't want to tell her that warm clothes are not warm, then just double-layered cloth. But suddenly felt piercing gaze towards her.
Shu Ya had a hunch and wanted to make sure is it right. "Bring all your clothes here. Now." Her words were ordering her to do it.
As soon Shu Ya saw the clothes she almost cursed. The thin clothes were perfect for hot weather in the south. But here on the north, they were freezing. In wonder, she looked at Rouxi. "How long did you serve your past mistress?"
"Five years. She was not wealthy and prices of warm cloth here are seriously ridiculous." She tries to explain.
"Fine, what is then the story about shoes?" Shu Ya still felt something was off.
Ruoxi had no words to explain so she some with a tiny voice. "My feet grew so fast that mistress had to buy me new shoes too often so she chose to let me wear straw shoes until my feet don't stop.
Shu Ya closed her eyes in anger and patted her chest to calm down. Ruoxi was actually a smart girl so she rushed to pour some warm water for her to drink.
Seeing her quick motions Shu Ya felt even angrier. "We will go to the city tomorrow. I heard that leather is cheap in the north. So I will order shoes for everyone here. Mingli, what about clothes for others?"
He came forward. "Miss, there are two more servants to the house. One is a cook and one is a common worker. You made ten sets of warm clothing for us. We can give them half. And for warm shoes, I already ordered for us three. For miss, for Ruoxi and for Mingyu we can order shoemaker to come here and take form."
Shu Ya smiled. "Knowing you, you ordered simple leather shoes only, right?"
He nodded but was reproached. ''Mingli, do I treat you servants so bad? You will keep your clothes as I will let them sew new ones for the other two servants. I have enough simple warm cloth. For winter I want you all to wear good stuffed shoes with warm wool inside. I saw some clothes the people here wear to keep warm. We can buy those as well over the warm clothes when the temperatures become icy."
She looked at Rouxi. "I will order two sets for us as well. I have no wish to freeze when I take a stroll in wintertime."
Ruoxi shook her head. "Miss, winters here are too crazy. Strolling is not good "
Shu Ya sighed. "Do you know that most people get sick in winter because they stay inside the whole time? Hardening their body is the best against sickness. Don't look at me like that. I sad stroll, I didn't say I will walk to the city on foot."
Mingli snickered and glanced at Ruoxi that just gave up.
Shu Ya turned her head to him and narrowed her eyes. "You think you are smart? Knowing you, you paid coal with your own money. Tsk. Bring me a recipe to give you money back. Then the contracts of those two people as well. Tomorrow I will check the farm."
She looked through the contracts as well as the one for the farm. Mingli gave her the rest of the money and she paid him back the coal price. "Mingli, I know your heart, but save money. I am fine. Let's eat now."
