"You really are not friends with him and you don't like him?" Mother Mei asked, taking Jiaying by surprise. Their mother wasn't the type to have such discussions with her, maybe with Lijuan, but certainly not with her.

"Why?" Jiaying asked suspiciously.

"Well, even though I like the young man and would want him to be at my birthday party, I don't want it to seem like I'm imposing him on you. You can take back the invite." Mother Mei offered.

"Really? Geez! Thanks a lot. Like I can just take it back after offering it? Maybe I should just tell him my dog died and the birthday was cancelled, something like that?" Jiaying asked dryly.

"Ouch!" She yelled when her mother hit her arm.

"Why don't you like such a fine and intelligent young man, anyway?" Mother Mei asked with a displeased frown. 

"Do I have to like him just because he is fine and intelligent?" Jiaying asked with a scoff.
