I hear them talking. It's a little hard to hear, but I can still make out what they're saying.
"Well Tom," Mom talks to Dad. "what do you think?"
"I don't really know," Dad murmurs. "I wish we didn't have to tell her..."
"Well we're going to have to assess the situation one way or another."
"Yeah, I know." he seems really sad. For some reason I really feel bad for him. I don't know why though. What is going on?
"Anyways, we'll have to tell Grace one way or another." Tell me what?! I want to burst through the door and demand an answer, but I don't. I know I shouldn't.
"Yeah, I know." he repeats himself. Ge sounds so sad...did the kitten die? Is it seriously injured?
"There's nothing more we can do. We'll have to take it to the vet. Grace will want to come, but she has school tomorrow. We need to take him now." I want to be by the kitten's side, I found it with Laureen. It sounds like it's alive, but needs medical attention. Also, him? I guess the cat's a guy.
"I guess we'll just have to keep her updated." he sighs.
I head back upstairs quietly, then head back down louder so they won't suspect me eavesdropping. They don't seem to scramble at all. They're perfectly quiet. I knock on the door.
"Come in," Mom says, totally normal. Pretending everything is fine. I enter the room.
"How's it going?" I ask as I pop in. I don't know anything, I never heard anything. At least, that's how I act.
"Well," Dad speaks up, surprisingly. "it's a he, and he isn't doing the best. It's not that bad, but he'll have to go to the vet. We believe his paw is sprained, and we're no professionals here."
"Exactly," Mom agrees with him. "we're sending him to the vet. You can't go cause of school, but we'll keep you updated."
"Just a sprained paw?" I ask as they nod back. "That's actually a relief. I'm glad it's not worse than that. It could be really bad."
"Way to stay positive, kiddo." Dad smiles at me. "Now, we're going to head to the vet. Get enough sleep and we'll let you know if anything goes haywire."
"Ok," I respond. "sounds good." I head upstairs.
A sprained paw? That's not really good. It's probably why it fell asleep in the middle of the road. I'll tell Laureen first thing in the morning instead of over text. It'll be easier that way. I just hope little furball is ok.
I head in my room a d flop on my bed. Today was fun but tiring. I can't wait to see Laureen again. Funny that I'll see her again in a few hours. However, it still feels so long. There's nothing I can do about it, so I make sure my phone is plugged in and lay down. The melatonin takes effect, making me sleepy. I slowly drift off, waiting a new day.
