"What do you mean, Ray?" Lillian asked, trying to keep the anticipation in her eyes to a minimum.
Fortunately for her, Ray didn't look at her so she didn't have to worry about it too much.
"Well …" He started but stopped, forcing a smile at her, "It's nothing. You don't have to worry about it, Lillian."
Noooo! Tell me our angsty backstory!
"Why don't you tell me, Ray? Or … could it be that you don't trust me?" Lillian tried coaxing him.
"No, it's nothing like that." Ray protested, "It's just … the story is a little … you know?"
Yes, I know. That's why I want to hear it. Why can't you understand that?
"I do but it's Ray, right? If your sister can't listen to your woes then who will?" She asked, pulling that card out of her as- head.
It's because you are my sister that I don't wish to tell you this." Ray said, "I want to keep this kind of past away from you."
