So obviously Si Xia was very surprised when Mrs. Yu rubbed his back and spoke in a voice that was a bit choked up, "I'm sorry. That must have been so difficult for you."
Si Xia said nothing as he focused on his work. He was sure that his voice would crack up if he spoke right now. Mrs. Yu removed her hand from his back and spoke with a smile, "But don't ever think for a moment that you're alone. You are always going to have Chen. I can see it in her eyes. And even if things don't work out, you're always welcome here dear. I've always wanted a son."
Si Xia nodded and spoke, "Thank you." As he had expected, his voice cracked.
But Mrs. Yu didn't comment on it or the tears she definitely had seen falling out of Xia's eyes as the quietly continued their work.
Si Xia wondered what had he ever done to deserve to meet such wonderful people as he tried to hold back the tears thay fell freely from his eyes.
Outside, Mr. Yu and Chen were setting up the fireworks.
"Okay so dad. Why don't you like him?" Yu Chen asked, straightening up and putting her hands on her hips.
"Like who?" Mr. Yu pretended to be oblivious.
Chen rolled her eyes, "The neighbour next door. Of course I'm talking about Xia! Why don't you like him!?"
Mr. Yu spoke after thinking about it, "Well initially I disliked him because he made you cry."
"But. . . . . . .?" Yu Chen pushed.
"But now I think he's not that bad." Mr. Yu spoke with a sigh.
Yu Chen tilted her head and asked, "What do you mean dad?"
Mr. Yu sighed and straightened up. He looked Chen in the eyes and spoke, "Look Chen, I'm obviously going to need a bit of a time to adjust to the fact that he might be the one to take my lovely daughter away from me."
"Okay. So that's your facade. Tell me the real reason now." Chen spoke, not breaking eye contact with her dad.
Mr. Yu smiled as he looked down, "You're a bit too smart for me. Yeah. That's not completely it. It's just that, at first, I saw how much you loved him. And I was scared inside about what would happen if he ever broke your heart."
Tears welled up in Chen's eyes as she remembered all that her family had to go through because once she had gotten her heart broken.
"But I'm not worried about that anymore." Mr. Yu continued. Chen looked up surprised. "I have seen the boy and he clearly loves you. Maybe a bit too much." Mr. Yu spoke slowly, trying to put his thoughts into words.
"What do you mean?" Yu Chen asked with a frown.
Mr. Yu shrugged, "He looks at you like he's willing to jump in front of a bullet to save you. But no, he won't stop at only sacrificing himself. He looks at you like he would commit a murder if it meant you would be happy."
"And the worst is that you look at him like you'll help him hide the body." Mr. Yu added as an afterthought.
