Yu Chen felt guilty for leaving seven years ago when her friends were going through such tough times, but more than that, she felt guilty about having made the jump.
Chen had definitely improved her future by doing that, but what about the changes she had made in the lives of the people around her. Chen felt that if she had not made the jump, she would be the only one unhappy.
Mo Kio would have had a bright future. Xi Hua, well Xi Hua was happy.
But then Hua's face as she leaned on Zenghai's shoulder during lunch appeared in Chen's mind, and the memory of her closeness with Si Xia, Yu Chen had complicated feelings.
Xi Hua tapped on Chen's shoulder as she said, "Where are you zoning out to? Only one person is allowed in his room at a time."
Yu Chen snapped back as she said, "You can go in first. I'll wait here."
Xi Hua nodded as she went in. Yu Chen sat down on a couch and took out her phone and opened a game. But she was in no mood, so she put down her phone and closed her eyes.
The memories of the times before she had made the jump flooded into her mind.
Her pain, the person she had become, the years when she had returned back to the village.
Her family's pain, upon seeing her like that, everything flooded back. Yu Chen's eyes were moist when Xi Hua came and tapped on her shoulder. She said, "Go on."
Yu Chen did not say a word as she opened a door and walked into the adjoining room.
As Yu Chen walked into the room, her eyes turned misty. Tears threatened to fall. Mo Kio lay there on a bed, nothing but an oxygen mask attached to his face.
When Yu Chen had left, Mo Kio had been in a dire situation, all those needles in his hand and bandages. But now, he looked more like he was asleep.
Yu Chen walked closer and noticed that he seemed a lot thinner. Which was quite obvious, as he had been on IVs for seven years. His cheeks, had sunk and he looked quite pale. Yu Chen pulled a chair beside his bed and sat down.
She said, "Hey Kio. I'm back. I know it's been a while, but I went to study and now I know everything there is to know about computers. You remember that awful kid, Sam Darcy? He turned out to be quite a nice fellow. He helped me during my time in London. And Kio....."
Yu Chen felt her voice breaking. She swallowed the lump in her throat and continued, "Look, what I brought you back."
Yu Chen took out a locket from her pocket and opened it. It was a heart shaped one, that opened to reveal two heart shaped small frames.
Kio's picture was inside one of them, and the other one was empty. Yu Chen stared at the picture, it was taken after they had come second in the 99-open software competition.
Though only his face was visible, you could clearly tell he was happy. Mo Kio was smiling showing his pointed teeth. He was winking and had dimples on his cheek.
Yu Chen closed the locket and put it on his bedside table.
