章 51: Ready for the competition
"Oh god. His voice!!! Filled with worry, sounds so sexy!!!" Yu Chen thought, but she checked her thoughts and replied, "How is your tour going?"
Si Xia: "It is okay. But what about you?"
Yu Chen did not reply as she had seen a pair of birds sitting and chirping on a tree. They looked really cute so Yu Chen burst out before she could help herself, "Ooooo, PRETTY!!!"
Si Xia's voice came to her, "What? Did you see a mirror?"
Yu Chen thought it would be troublesome to explain, so she directly switched to a video call. As his face came into view, Yu Chen turned the camera towards the birds. Then she blushed, because Chen had not noticed that the birds had started clicking their beaks together, which looked like they were kissing. When Chen changed the camera back to her face, she noticed that there was also a faint blush on his cheeks, which she could make out in the dim light where he was. She asked, "Where are you?"
Si Xia showed the his phone around the room. It was a small room, probably in a small hotel. Yu Chen: "Couldn't the school provide you with a better place?"
Si Xia: "This was not provided by the school. They paid for food during tour and traveling expenses, but I had to find my own accommodation."
Yu Chen nodded. She wondered where Si Xia got the money. As far as she had known, Xia was an orphan. He had grew up in an orphanage and had left it when he was 15.
But she never could make out where he got all this money from. Neither the previous time, nor now.
Yu Chen brushed off these thoughts, and they continued to talk. Xia was on a video call, which made Chen feel like he was with her. Yu Chen was thankful for this as he was a great help to calm her nerves. After a while silence settled between them. Yu Chen continued her walk and Si Xia kept her company. The silence was not awkward, it was peaceful. Neither felt the need to break it as they looked at the scenery around them.
Si Xia only cut the call when Chen had reached her apartment.
Yu Chen: "Okay bye now. I'm meeting with everyone in half an hour and have to get ready."
Si Xia: "Hmm, all the best."
Yu Chen smiled and didn't say anything.
Si Xia: "Call me after the competition. I would love to congratulate you."
Yu Chen: "I haven't yet won."
Si Xia gave her a smile. It was a smile whose warmth Chen could feel even through her mobile screen. He said, "Yet."
Yu Chen blushed and mumbled, "Thanks." before hurriedly cutting off the call.
Chen slapped both her hands on her cheeks and said, "Okay Chen. This is it. The big day. Stay focused, and give them all hell."
Then she hurried off to get dressed.
Yu Chen put on her most comfortable clothes. She wore a tank top and over it an oversized t-shirt which she adjusted to slip off one of her shoulders. Then she pulled on a black jeans and white sneakers. Chen topped off her outfit with pulling her hair in a bun and putting on a cap.
