There were people out in the hall, and some of them stopped to look at them, but because of all the noise, everyone just thought it was an argument between another couple. Seeing all the people standing there seemed to give Edie more courage. She looked at them and wanted to scream for help, but everyone looked at her with pity as if she had done something wrong.
