Morning came quickly, someone had woken them up, banging on the doors to inform them that unless they wished to pay for another night at the Glorious Boar Inn they must attend to breakfast and get the hell out.
Bast was cross at being spoken to in such a manner, but before she could raise her voice Ra laid a gentle hand on her arm, "We'll be right down," he called out, his mood was pleasant and this reflected in his tone.
"Mn, see that you do." came the tart reply, and they heard the retreating footsteps echoing off the wooden floorboards.
Bast shot him a questioning look as if to ask, "Why did you stop me?" but she remained silent and Ra didn't offer an explanation.
The twins had slept through the racket, and after getting dressed, Ra woke them up with gentle shakes. "C'mon, get up," he urged and was rewarded with groans and mild complaints. "I've no issue leaving you here," he said teasingly, his eyes twinkling, "none at all." The twins jumped out of bed and immediately flew to the door and after wrenching it open darted into the hall. Ra heard their thundering steps descend the stairs and chuckled evilly.
Turning to Bast, he extended a hand and she took it, together, they made their way downstairs to breakfast.
They encountered a scene that was quite lively, a number of odd guests crowded one end of the table laden with food, on the other sat only, Merlin and Xiara on one end, Gwyn and Morrigan on the other, somehow they'd managed to secure an entire section of the table for themselves as none dared to approach.
Bast eyed the pair with a number of questions reflected in her gaze. The two sat close together, their fingers entwined beneath the table. The food lay steaming and forgotten in front of them.
Ra paid no intention to any of this himself instead pulling a massive plate of beef, bread, and griffon stew towards him. Runic patterns emerged at the tips of his fingers as he gazed intently at the dishes, and finding no poison he immediately dug into his meal. Bast shook her head as she watched all of this take place, finally joining him.
Ra slowed his consumption when she sat next to him, a thick piece of beef clenched in his fist. He grinned at her expression, "here," he said to her in a low voice as he tore the meat into thin strips. He held it out to her, dripping grease on the table. Bast rolled her eyes up to the ceiling, but opened her mouth.
Ra's teeth were gleaming as he grinned, slowly feeding her.
Across the table, Xiara cut her eyes at Merlin, pointedly glancing at the food on the table.
Merlin looked embarrassed as he awkwardly pulled a bowl of griffon stew closer.
Xiara tapped her foot impatiently, sending repeated looks at the cute scene unfolding across the table. "Oh, nevermind!" she snapped as Merlin fumbled the spoon he'd been holding. Merlin hung his head, and shortly after he'd gotten up and raced out the door. Xiara looked guiltily at the bowl that rocked gently back and forth, the spoon still swirling in a circular motion in the stew and then raced out the door behind him.
The twins had devoured their food, and like a horde of locusts, fell upon the meals in front of the other patrons. Eventually, the owner received enough complaints and kicked them out.
Xiara and Merlin appeared to be heatedly discussing something near the inn, seeing this, Ra harbored no intentions of interrupting them. Instead, his destination today was naturally the catacombs, their original purpose in coming here.
Bast had related what she had experienced in the tunnels so Ra knew more or less what to expect.
Mlewyn, Taliesin, Rwain, Tarian, Pwyll, Evander, Deja, Alluns and Ausria, otherwise known as the 9 Paragons of Arda.
Ra had resolved to tackle the challenge of Mlewyn, the leader. Gwyn and Morrigan, however, would not enter the catacombs, Ra determined it was too dangerous to risk their lives, in any case, he did not wish to attract too much attention by removing all the treasures from the ancient crypt.
The entrance to the catacombs was packed when they arrived, a huge crowd thronged the tunnels.
Ra grabbed a man attempting to push his way through the densely packed mob swarming the entranceway.
"Good brother, what's going on?" he asked, his tone remarkably friendly. The man gave him a dubious look, glancing from him to Bast as if unsure of how to respond, seeing their expressions remain unchanged he asked, "You mean you don't know?" he asked suspiciously, "Know what?" Ra answered slightly irritated, the man balked, "T-The c-c-crypt! One of the crypts is open!" Ra's eyes shone, "WHOSE?!" The man panicked, "Taliesin's!" he blurted and slipped out of Ra's grip and disappeared among the crowd.
"Bast?" Ra could not resist giving her a look. Bast shrugged, it wouldn't do to be too greedy, it's enough just to claim the inheritance, let them have the treasures. Ra nodded in agreement, by this time most of the crowd had entered the crypt, the grave of the Paragon, Taliesin revealing not the bones of the deceased mage as they had expected but a treasure room containing all her worldly belongings.
Ra stepped inside the entrance, kicked the trick step with his heel as if he was slipping on it, and a section of stone on his left shifted to reveal a passageway which descended into the catacombs. Ra looked back at Bast who stood behind him, "You should head back," he said quietly, "take care of the kids." Bast nodded, she leaned in to kiss him.
He accepted it, breathing in as the softness of her mouth ignited a raging desire to bite and capture her lips in his own. He suppressed the fire threatening to burn through his eyes and turned to descend the steps leading down into the tunnels. Bast sighed as she took a step back, watching the stone shift back into place, sealing it once more.
