章 16: Midnight
It was a little past midnight. The only form of illumination available was the soft glow of the moonlight. Skylar laid awake, staring at the ceiling. Her mind roamed back to the incident between her and her boss. She could still feel his soft lips on hers, his hands that roamed through her body, his sensual breath that mixed up with hers as they panted; yet, she had stopped him.
She was scared. He was her boss for pete's sake, but what scared her most was how she felt while kissing him. She felt drawn to him like an addict to a drug. She didn't want to let go but she knew she had to, so she stopped him before it went any further.
"We should stop, this isn't right." was what she had said before running to her room. She stayed there till she heard the sound of Richard's car exit the premises, and she was still there when she heard its return. She hadn't eaten or cleaned up the flour-filled kitchen. She only managed to take her bath and change her clothes.
Richard's emotions were in a turmoil. He was feeling so many things at once, but he didn't want to stop to dwell on any of those feelings. He didn't know why he had kissed her or why she kissed him back, but he wished she never stopped him. He understood why she did, but the selfish part of him didn't want to.
He cleaned himself up and drove out of the mansion to clear his head but the effort was futile as he could only think about Skylar. He wondered what would have happened if she didn't stop him as he knew he wouldn't have been able to stop himself.
After his experience with Anita, Richard liked being in control of situations and his feelings, but with Sky, he lost all inhibitions and strangely, he wasn't bothered. It actually felt good to let himself be vulnerable for a minute, to break down the walls around him and let go, knowing that he was safe with the other person. Safe, that was how he felt with her. A feeling that has been alien to him for a long time.
Richard's only company was the gentle breeze, the starry skies, the chirping of crickets and the thoughts of Skylar. He didn't know how long he stayed out of the house. He knew he had to talk to her, but he didn't know what to say. After a while, he decided to go back home.
It was past midnight when he got home. As he passed through the kitchen, he saw the mess they had made there. He could tell Skylar hadn't come back to the kitchen since the kiss, and that meant she hadn't had dinner, unless she ordered take-out, and he really doubted it.
He dropped his keys and began cleaning up the kitchen as well as he could. When he was done, he prepared something quick for them to eat. Richard never made any effort with a lady before but there he was cooking and cleaning for his housekeeper.
He had gotten to love eating in the kitchen as a result of Skylar's influence. After setting the meal on the table, he set out to the staff quarters. He didn't know if she was even going to be awake, but he went anyway.
Skylar was lost in her thoughts when she heard a knock on her door. She ignored it at first, she didn't know who could be knocking on her door. The knock came again, and she jumped from the bed, grabbing a pillow as a weapon, she walked slowly towards the door.
"Wh—who is it?" she questioned with a shaky voice.
"Sky it's me, hope I didn't wake you," Richard replied.
"What do you want?"
"Uh I know it's late but can you come with me please, just to the main house." He waited for an answer and when it seemed like she wouldn't reply, the door opened.
Skylar stood looking at the floor and waited for Richard to lead the way. When she got to the kitchen, she was amazed. Everywhere was clean and there was food on the table. She watched in awe as Richard made her a plate and then made another for himself.
Her heart felt warm at that moment and suddenly a thought came to her. She wondered if he was doing all that to ask her on a date. As lovely as it sounded, she knew it couldn't happen, she had to know her place as a housekeeper.
Richard didn't know why he felt like he had wronged Skylar; he was going out of his way to do things for her, to appease her. He watched her from his peripheral view as they ate in tense silence until she broke the ice.
"Thanks for this Richard. I mean, the food and the fact that you cleaned up, that's my job and you can take it out of my paycheck, but I'm not sure why you did all this though."
"It's alright, I just wanted to help, I'm not taking it out of your paycheck," staring intently at her, he said, "I think we should talk about what happened earlier so that things doesn't get any more awkward than they are now."
"We can't ever let that happen again Richard. You're my employer and I'm your staff and that's how it will always be."
