章 5: Scene 2; Split Persona
CAEL
Wait, What did you say?
EVE
She died two years ago.
CAEL
I think I misheard, could you repeat that?
EVE
No you heard correctly.
CAEL
Are you kidding?
EVE
You see me laughing?
CAEL
Ah god, I'm sorry, I didn't know.
EVE
It's okay, It has been a long time, I just try to forget it again.
CAEL
Those news hit like a truck, I need a break.
EVE
I'll get you something to drink.
CAEL
No, please don't.
EVE
Okay.
Eve pours herself a drink, and sits down.
CAEL
what happened.
EVE
It was an accident, she died from an accident.
CAEL
Is that why you changed schools?
EVE
No, me changing was before.
CAEL
I see.
Cael walks in circles, and contemplates whether he should start talking or not.
CAEL (CONT'D)
Are you willing to talk about it?
EVE
I don't know.
CAEL
I also knew her, shouldn't I have a right too?
EVE
I don't know where to start.
CAEL
Start wherever you want to start.
EVE
Haa, okay. But I'm warning you.
CAEL
From what?
EVE
From me.
CAEL
Sorry, what.
EVE
You'll understand.
CAEL
Okay, whatever, so what happened?
EVE
What do you still remember about her.
CAEL
What I remember is that she was a great person. And I'm not saying this because I'm feeling sorry for her. I genuinely mean it. She had that innocent charm. Your sister was one of the silent types though. Never talked with anybody and only rarely came to school. Even I only had one good conversation with her.
EVE
Well, she changed a lot after she transferred into the new school. She was a weak girl, which is why she couldn't appear a lot.
CAEL
Yeah, I know.
EVE
But just after the transfer, she felt a lot better. You see, she felt a lot more energetic, so we made a vow. I told her that she should find some friends and make some memories.
CAEL
that's great, how did it go?
EVE
She definitely found some friends. (beat) They where five or six, I can't remember, I only know Luzy was one of them.
CAEL
Okay.
EVE
But it was all a mistake.
CAEL
What exactly?
EVE
They were always together, but my sister wasn't part of them. Her eyes opened only when there's where closed. (beat) And then I messed up, and she left me.
CAEL
What are you talking about, can you specify?
Eve holds herself as she shudders from her memories.
EVE
I don't know, I can't remember, (beat) I should have stopped her. They didn't know.
She starts turning more emotional.
CAEL
Woah, you okay?
EVE
I don't know, I can't remember.
CAEL
Hey, breathe.
EVE
I said, I can't remember!
Eve and Cael look each other in the eye, their breathing synchronizes, as Eve puts her hand on her own neck, and squeezes tightly. Slowly, her face regains the composed gaze she had in the beginning.
EVE (CONT'D)
I'm sorry.
CAEL
Why, nothing happened.
EVE
There's something wrong with me.
CAEL
Don't say that.
EVE
But it's the truth.
CAEL
It will be if you keep thinking that.
EVE
Well, what am I supposed to do, I can't get through the barrier, that I have set in my heart, or my brain.
CAEL
I see it's still too early.
EVE
I really thought I might be over it, as I am pretty normal in my daily life.
CAEL
Calm down, it's not that big of a deal.
EVE
I am calm.
CAEL
Good.
Eve breathes in.
CAEL (CONT'D)
Have you talked to anyone about it?
EVE
talk about what?
CAEL
Your state.
EVE
yes, i mean, no, there's no use.
CAEL
how come?
EVE
Nobody understands.
CAEL
I see.
EVE
Ah, it's raining.
CAEL
It has already been for a long time, didn't you notice?
EVE
No not really. (beat) When she died, it also rained, I hate the rain.
CAEL
I love the rain.
EVE
Why?
CAEL
Nobody sees you crying, when it's raining.
EVE
What, so you can cry?
CAEL
No, not anymore. (beat) But there is another reason I liked the rain.
EVE
Oh.
CAEL
It was when the weather was like this, that I went outside the most.
EVE
Really, for what reason?
CAEL
To water the plants.
EVE
Eh.
CAEL
I also used to build things, just to destroy them, used turn on the lights in the middle of the day or freeze stuff, just to let it melt. You see, a year ago, I was told I am not right in my head.
EVE
Who told you?
CAEL
My mother brought me to a psychiatrist, they told me that I had narcissistic tendencies. At that time I found it funny, that she, someone that should accept me no matter who I am, was actually trying to change me as a person. I never felt right at home with my parents, but it was through this incident, that I realized what I am really dealing with.
EVE
(apologetic)
Oh, I never knew.
CAEL
I make it sound harsher than it needs to be, when I was actually diagnosed, I wasn't really devastated or anything. It felt like a natural occurrence or something like that. Just, there was that small hole in my heart, I never really could close.
EVE
What did you do afterwards?
CAEL
I walked, and I walked. Soon I began to run, searching for the missing key, only after a long time, realizing that there's nothing wrong with my mind. (beat) The hole has been since there since the day I could talk and it will be until I can't (beat) I am a narcissist and I am glad to be one.
A short silence sweeps between them. The sound of RAINDROPS and THUNDER start to harmonize, creating a cold symphony, and slowly approaching the chorus.
CAEL (CONT'D)
Well, that's just a boring little story of my past, (laughter). But in the end, just cause everyone calls us crazy, are we crazy? So what If we are? Who defines if your head is wrong.
EVE
What are you trying to tell me with this?
CAEL
I don't believe that something is wrong with your mind, and neither should you. And with such a mindset, I want you to answer me honestly - what happened to your sister?
EVE
You are a maniac.
CAEL
Exactly my point.
The rain ends, and the only sound remaining is the water dropping down the leaves. Eve stares at Cael and with the last thunder reverberating through the room, Eves expression changes one last time, this time to a happier almost exhilarated expression. Thus she really resembles a chaotic person, now.
EVE
(laughter)
Let me think, let me think.
CAEL
Now we are talking.
EVE
Wait, I think I got something.
CAEL
Oh, tell me, what is it?
EVE
Hush, darling no need to rush. Or the ghost of patience might haunt you.
CAEL
okay, take your time, we have a lot after all.
EVE
Mmh, okay, I'm done, take a pencil.
CAEL
Okay, I'm listening.
EVE
tell me, have you ever been framed before?
CAEL
What, framed, what do you mean?
EVE
Biting the bullet for someone else, getting thrown under the bus, being blamed in general, you know.
CAEL
I suppose I have, why?
EVE
How do you cope with that?
CAEL
I guess, I do what everyone else does, denying the allegations and trying to prove my innocence.
EVE
You see, and this is where you are wrong, my dear. I know that when I'm going down, it better be for the damn truth.
CAEL
What does this have to do with anything?
EVE
Patience, I say, do you even listen? Anyways if you pin something onto me, that isn't the truth, I'll make sure it turns out to be, in the end. Cuz if you tell anybody, I stabbed you, I might actually really will.
CAEL
Okay?
EVE
See, me and Luzy, we weren't always friends, in fact I despised her.
CAEL
What?
EVE
You gotta watch out, humans always come with a mask ya'know? Don't let your first impression be your last.
CAEL
That, I am clearer of than anyone else.
EVE
So let's rip her mask off for a second, and only for a second.
CAEL
Okay, I'm ready.
EVE
That little girl actually has her secrets too, and I don't know what they are. But I assure you, they are as dark as mine. If you don't watch out, you'll get caught in her grasps. Okay, second over.
CAEL
Huh? What do you mean second over? You haven't told me anything.
EVE
My house, my rules. So Bai-Bye. Arrive-derci. I can't stay long.
CAEL
What are you talking about?
EVE
Oh and let me tell you one last something, even though, I love that crazy devil, doesnt mean everyone else does. (laughter)
CAEL
Tone down a bit, I have no idea what you are talking about.
Cael grabs Eve, and her expression changes back to her at beginning of their meeting - a shy girl.
EVE
Eh, Cael? Are you Okay?
CAEL
What, am I okay, you wanted to tell me something? You weren't done yet.
EVE
Tell you what?
EVE
Your sister, Luzy, everything.
EVE
I'm sorry, but didn't I already say, I can't remember.
CAEL
Really, try thinking about it again, maybe not about your sister, think about Luzy.
EVE
Why are you mentioning Luzy?
CAEL
Just do it.
EVE
Uhh, I vaguely remember her being with a friend, a boy.
CAEL
Okay, what where they doing?
EVE
Talking? No, fighting. But i don't know why, you gotta ask Luzy to know. Anyways haven't we wasted enough time already? There's still a task that we have to complete after all.
CAEL
Ah, wait I wasn't done, yet.
EVE
So, have you read the drama?
CAEL
(sigh), yes.
EVE
By the way, I heard you will be meeting Luzy?
CAEL
Ah, yes, tomorrow afternoon to be exact.
EVE
I hope she won't trouble you too much, she's a klutz after all.
CAEL
