章 2: Book of ReX ch2

The Demonic trap had been sprung and the commando's will was no longer their own.

Rex however was unaffected.

When the demon's gazed upon him, he felt strong and did not fear the sinister being in front of him. He had no regrets and had lived life to serve other people and do what was right for those more unfortunate than him.

His free will was sealed in an iron coffin in his mind and was impenetrable to simple mind games.

He was forced to watch in bewilderment as his comrades fell victim to their fear and insecurities.

Each member of the covert squad turned and faced each other. Their marionette like movement was eerie. Rex could see it in their eyes, wild and bewildered. It was sorrow, and fear. Real fear.

Kitty had trained her rifle on Rex. The others at one another. They were now aiming at each other. Rex held his gun on the man in the red robes.

"What are you doing?" Rex said through clenched teeth "I am not the enemy."

"I'm sorry, I am so, so very sorry" Kitty was babbling, tears ran down her face. She clutched her ear with one hand and blood started to trickle down her wrist. Her rifle remained steady and on target. Her eyes glazed over and her hand returned to the gun, she leveled the sights.

"Don't do this!" Rex pleaded, but he knew that he was in deep shit. If he moved an inch, she would probably blast his brains onto the floor. The major advanced toward the ghoul. Rex felt deaths cool breath on the nape of his neck. This was one of the worst SNAFUs he had ever taken part in. He took a deep breath, focused and leaned on his training.

He kept his weapon on the threat in the middle of the room and trusted that he would come out of this in one peace. The Major was on his side and it appeared that they still held the edge. There was still hope for Rex to complete the mission, no matter how grotesque and otherworldly it had become.

"Fire."  The demon gave the command to his puppets with sick delight. Rex began to move as soon as the enemy made a movement.

All at once Boomer, Kitty, and Paige pulled their trigger, bullets hurled through the air and slammed into their target.

Rex dove face first toward the altar, the bullet whizzed by the back of his head tearing off some flesh and hair.  A bright light exploded in his eyes from the shock wave of the bullet.  In the blink of an eye the Major and the Man in Robes rushed toward each other.

Rex stumbled forward, his vision became blurred, but he swore that major had sprouted enormous white wings through the back of his uniform, and was wielding a silver claymore style sword while the Demonic figure in red robes sprouted bat wings and brandished a black claymore.

'Must be suffering from a concussion.' Rex mind felt like liquid concrete in the tumbler, slow and goopy. He processed the events the best he could. His skull pounding with pain, his vision not quite clear, possibly he was hallucinating. Rex knew he must be seeing things as these creatures did not exist.

Time slowed as events unfolded unnaturally fast. Rex hung in the air for a moment, then he felt cold stone on his shoulder. Rex tucked and rolled to concealment on instinct. Thousands of repetitive dives and rolls all came to life for this one perfect moment, the moment to survive.

The two figures came together their blades clanging together in an enormous boom. The shock wave lifted the dust off the ground and lifted Rex off the ground pushing him from the ledge of the altar and back into harm's way. He clumsily pulled the trigger of his gun letting off a burst of bullets that pounded into the back of the Demonic figure.

The monster didn't give notice to being shot as he and the major continued to battle.

"This isn't happening. This can't be real." Rex was dumbfounded; his eyes could barely keep up with the movements of the two monstrous creatures. Masterful thrusts, parries, dodges, feints, stabs, blocks and counters in vibrant display. So much so fast Rex felt infantile.

Each vicious clang of the two competitors' swords sent huge shockwaves through the room, making Rex Crouching as low as he could, he was forced to shield his eyes  with his off hand as he peered over the ledge of the altar.

The woman lying on the altar wailed in pain and blood spurt from her already blood soaked garments. She was giving birth, and it was happening now.  Rex fell to his knees feeling helpless to do anything.

"Save the woman!" The Major blurted out to Rex. This solitary sentence turned out to be a fatal folly as the major lost concentration on the fight at hand and ended up with a blade in the gut.   Rex felt his heart ache as the Major crumpled to the cool stone floor. The man in robes smiled triumphantly as he slid his blade from the limp body.

The Hispanic woman on the table writhed in pain and her belly looked as if it was going to burst. She cried out frantically and gritted her teeth; she was pushing on her own. The body demanded that the occupant of her womb be born into the world and was doing all it could to evict the tenant.

The demonic creature in the red robes came back to the altar, he licked his lips and smiled wild eyed at the half naked woman.  Her white robe had become a sweat and blood soaked cloth. The woman toiled in agony to relieve the pressure building in her body. Rex focused his might on the sights of his gun and unleashed a volley into the demon's face. The monsters facial tissue separated and was blown away, yet he was unaffected. The hellish beast raised his black claymore with both hands.

A broad smile crossed the burned flesh as he aimed the point of the blade at the heart of the helpless female.  He brought the hellish weapon down, stabbing the woman in the heart just as she gave her final push.

"No!" Rex screamed, but it was done the woman was dead, her eyes rolled into the back of her head.

Silence dominated the atmosphere as the fiery eyeballs of the heinous beast ogled the deceased woman. He grabbed the woman's legs, pushed them apart and pulled the baby from its mother. The monster cackled in delight as the baby moved and began to cry. The infant lay on the hard marble altar in a cooling pool of blood. It wailed out for his mother but only the grotesque monster and Rex heard his cry.  To Rex it appeared that the fiend was examining the baby, it's ghastly eyes blazed to and fro, searching for something.

"Yes,  the mark it is the same as..." The Evil hell spawn blinked his eyes in disbelief with a loopy smile crossed his face. The demon wobbled and blood came from his mouth. His head fell from his body, the Major stood behind him clutching his wound, his sword falling to the ground.  The blood from the stab wound soaked the front of his camouflage uniform. Rex ran over to the Major's side as his body became slack.

"What the hell, what is going on, are you an angel?" Rex couldn't believe his eyes and his brain was screaming for answers.

"If that's what you want to call me. But that doesn't matter now. All that matters is the child." The angelic figure coughed up blood as he talked. His skin was covered in holographic tattoos that shifted from silver, light blue and then white. His wings were not of feather as Rex first thought, they were made out of some kind of cable, and a shimmering light plastic like material. The wings began to burn away, a self destruct mechanism? Rex noticed that the man in red robes wings were burning away as well. He looked back to the Major.

"My journey is over, and I have prevented the turn of the tide, the sixth cycle is complete." Sweat covered the now pale bluish skin of the man with dove wings. He gasped for air, and his eyes starting to take the glassy look of death.

"You must protect the child from the forces of the dark; he is your responsibility now." The angelic being coughed up blood and stammered "Rex i.. i.. am.." he coughed up dark red blood, then he stopped moving. Death had taken him.  Rex looked at the raucous child on the slab, it was a boy.

The baby boy had brown hair and brown eyes, and there was a birthmark on the top of his head. Light pigmentation mixed with dark. It was not natural looking. Rex couldn't place the symbol, but it wasn't a natural birthmark. The baby flailed its arms in frustration and cried again. Rex looked at the carnage. He saw the Major's lifeless body start to burn away into ash. The man in the robes was almost completely gone by now. It too burning into oblivion.

"What the hell, this can't be real." Rex swallowed hard. Rex was shaken and didn't know what to do. He scooped the baby up and held him in his arms. If the Major wanted him to look after the child he would, he could not deny the man his final request.

There was no way he would ever let anything bad happen to this child. Rex had to get back to civilization, but he was alone and in now the caretaker of a child. The jungle was going to be impossible to navigate. Rex slowly walked back down the passageway, he needed to get out of the darkness. He felt like the light is where he belonged, and he needed to bask in it. As soon as he exited the ruin the warm sun blazed down on him it was a great relief.

A noise caught his attention. There were four all-terrain vehicles parked in the grassy clearing. Each ATV had brought a passenger load of three well-armed guerrilla fighters.

They took aim at him, stress and nervousness saturated the air. A woman dressed in a white suit with a purple undershirt and gold aviator glasses got out of the biggest ATV, it was a four wheeler with a cabin.

She briskly walked toward Rex.
