do they have an axe or chainsaw? it will take forever if they don't have a chainsaw.
weeds are good for fire starting too. some nuts will be a great help. black walnuts are great because of the high fat content but they might want them for food, the shell can still be used though.
remember that varnished, painted or treated wood is toxic.
