i think you can argue he is a regular s rank. when deciding on your rank it's usually not done with the idea that you can solo same rank boss monsters.
He never would've expected it. But, it was a must for him to use the sniper rifle. After all, it was the only weapon that he had on hand that would have enough firepower to pierce the Guardian's armour.
