Around the late 2000s his parents were having money problems by the time he was born and he wanted to help them with it. If you're wondering why his "past" self is there, I just thought why not bring in Cain's family to make it more real to him. Have an actual connection to DC through his family, who knows maybe he'll interact with his "past" self one day (don't count on that).
He did go back to the same universe. I think about like his subconscious left a mark that would guide him back to his reality in DC even if he didn't know it. He isn't time traveling either and hopefully never will because if that happens my mind is gonna break from trying to wrap my head around how that would happen and what Cain would do. Hope that explains it.
