It would work, if its like you just described. The problem is the complete disredard to their age. Baby dragon, adolescent dragon, adult dragon and ancient dragon all describe an age range. But now the novels are saying they evolve into an acient dragon at 5 years old or even worse are born as ancient dragon. As age often couples with size, just imagine a 300m long dragon hatching out of a 1m egg. The same with evolutions: Say one evolves from hatchling to adolescent after leveling up 5 times. That means they can be like 500 years old just 3 months after being born. That just does not work logically. I still read these stories because i like dragons and other fantastical creatures but this whole age confusion thing really throws me off every time i read them.
