What if the Trace is more insidious? like Disney and their bs with the Disney+ ToS? Something they don't disclose or is super hidden, like: "You have been accepted ..." but by actually showing up to the school, you are agreeing with their ToS, and in their ToS the Trace is automatically added to them when they agree to attend at Hogwarts? Also, maybe the Trace works as when they cast spell's out of Hogwarts, the Trace checks if there are any adult wizards nearby, and if there aren't it identifies it as an break of the rules?
In the future, when he has time, he can ask the Sorting Hat to confirm this — it's normal that he doesn't detect the existence of the Trace on himself. After all, he doesn't believe the Sorting Hat would have the audacity to do anything to him.
