Well, there should be multiple options for speeding up the process. The era 2 hand ship interface looked like it directly connected to the gems who used it, so it should be possible to use the processing power from the ships computer to speed up the process. Fusion with other gems should help, especially if it's with Steven due to his Diamond status. There's also all the small cluster experiments and even the cluster itself that she can connect to speed things up. I don't know if corrupted gems could be used though.

I find the idea of having blood and a proper body makes sense. A gems lightform would be quite fragile if their bodies didn't even have a basic blueprint.
