Although it has been years the most likely answer is that the author talked a tough game but when it came time to put his money where his mouth is he decided to just start making excuses for the female characters. I've seen it far too many times. Authors love talking a big game to attract readers but when it finally comes time to kill a female character they create excuses and most likely add the girl to the harem. Female characters often have more plot armor than even the protagonists(at least good looking ones) because at least they can survive offending or even betraying the protagonist.
'Do you remember when I said I will not kill the girl if she decided to betray me? I said this for the exact reason. If I don't have the strength, what qualification do I have to keep her? Originally, I didn't have the idea to stay low-key.'
