It's not too difficult. Taon wasn't fully cognizant of starting the issue and he could only fight against Lanie or die. Lanie instead chose to ignore orders and fight to the death against Taon when he admitted guilt and she had plenty of options to fight, run, etc. I do like this writing though because I also hate Taon the most but he is the most "innocent"
They did not quite understand why Lanie was guilty while Taon got away easy. Did it matter that much that Lanie piloted a different kind of mech?

When she scared him ages ago I think it was the crown searching for the scroll not that she had a piece. Also according to Ves' speculation he has the whole scroll not a fragment that was turned into the system to cultivate a successor.

Well Cynthia wants to absorb human souls and negative emotions and the Beast of Fear wants to absorb fear from everything. It's in their interest for mass murder while Ves is saying if less than 1% goes mad with demonic cultivation then it's still better. He's also being forced to allow this since the alternative is already so much worse if he doesn't.
As far as she was concerned, a little collateral damage was no big deal as long as the most successful Carmine mech pilots grew quickly enough!
