I'm sure it doesn't matter to you anymore but for those that stumble upon this and want an answer, this is what I got for you. As mentioned, every 3 breakthroughs a cultivator will reach a bottleneck that requires a lot of energy to overcome. With this bottleneck the mc need three times the normal amount of energy for a normal breakthrough. At least that is what I got from what I read. Hope this helps.
