Oh, I think I got it, maybe not everything, but at least something of why he can't love them. Mikael is the concept of Freedom, or at least, it is a part of his being. If I understand what Emma is trying to say in this paragraph, is that they have the power to order him around, or even brainwash him in some way (like: I order you to love me). This means that they are, FOREVERMORE, his jailors and keepers, he can never be 100% free. And we also know he HATES brainwashing people.
