It was a pretty quick acceptance of something that literally redefined their entire worldview.

The "real" one. Yep... they are totally convinced.
"We'll hold you to that," his grandmother added, her tone firm but not unkind. "Your future is important, both in the magical world and the real one."

You would be surprised how far these kind of pranks can go.
His grandparents exchanged a look. They were not easily convinced, but the letter was too elaborate to be dismissed outright.

While the premise of this story is interesting, there's already one plot hole that bothers me : why is there no one to accompany your OC on his first outing into the magical world ? Canonically, muggle raised are always guided by a member of the staff when they first enter the magical world.

Don't really remember but it's true that there was this version too later in the manga. First, it was about returning to the circle, later it was about hell.
As the dust settles, it becomes clear that Riku's actions have consequences. He may have rid the area of Hollows, but his actions have also caused a great deal of destruction. The buildings are in ruins since he didn't bother to control the range of his spell, and the people are in shock. Riku stands amid the destruction, surveying the damage he's caused. He can feel the absence of all the souls lost in the battle, and the anger and fear that some of the surviving citizens feel towards him. He knows they see him as a monster, a ruthless killer. But he also knows that what he did was his job. His duty as a Shinigami is to the Seireitei, not the wandering souls of Rukongai.

"When the time comes, we hope you'll be the one to lay our poor misguided friend to rest," the man replied before looking down at him and giving him a sickly smile. "And do be careful with the body. If you turn him into a pile of ash, we won't be able to prove his identity, which might further draw attention to your loyalty, of course."

“Dying” to complete the connection. That makes a lot of sense. In canon, this “legend” was never really realized, hence the “nothing happened”. "Dying" was the secret condition after gathering the artifacts. This would also explain why no one was able to become the master of death before him. The condition of death is unrealistic for mortals. Probably a way for the God of Death to give mortals a false hope of mastering him. But Harry completed this hidden condition by dying...and coming back to life in another world. But contrary to what other comments suggest, I don't actually think that the deaths added by the multidimensional phenomenon influenced the process. Death is infinite. It's a concept, not something quantifiable. We don't add up deaths to get an effect. It was enough to obtain an “experience” of death without ceasing to “live”. And only reincarnation can help a mortal in this sense.
