Adam's gaze was fixated on the blue screen that was before him.
[Ding! For killing another sentient being for the first time, you have earned the skill: [Manslayer] ]
He perused the description of the Manslayer skill.
[Manslayer: You are less shaken when taking other's lives, your composure increases, your demeanor is more intense. Also, you deal slightly more damage to other humans.]
The skill would be of use when he fought other humans, but his conscious made him resist the idea of making use of this skill's effects more often than was necessary.
Taking someone's life came with the responsibility and knowledge that came from denying them a future.
Sucking in a deep breath, Adam staggered forward. His exhausted posture rekindling as his breathing continued, till he was upright.
Adam's gaze now glaring at the horizon.
He kept walking.
His movement ceaseless, he headed towards Walcon.
The setting light in the sky pressing down, as the luminescent light of the darkening sky tried to barge into his vision.
In his travel to Walcon, he did not encounter other bandits.
There was one carriage that raced down the dirt road, however it simply navigated around Adam when it neared, and carried on it's way.
Soon, the night became it's truest deepest shade of purple tinted ebony.
Seeing this, he set up camp for the night, which went by, without interruption.
Adam continued traveling, after packing up.
A few more days passed, the scenery shaping into hills then flattening again. The barren dirt becoming grass once more.
In the horizon of Adam's gaze were buildings spreading across the distance.
Closing in, he saw a stone wall lining his peripheral vision, with a manned gate.
The clarity of what he was seeing increasing, he recognized that there were two guards, one on both sides of the gate.
He waved as he was close enough.
The guards stances became defensive.
Adam pondered, a realization coming to mind, he took off his helmet.
At this, the guards seemed to have relaxed slightly.
Adam called out: "Hello, I am Adam, I am looking for the adventurer's guild, if I am not mistaken, this is Walcon."
One of the guards declared: "To answer you, yes, this is Walcon. But, to enter, Adam," the guard said swishing the name in his mouth, "You must present your identification."
Adam pulled out the medallion which he then presented, asking: "I believe this works?"
The guard taking it, examined it, their eye's widening.
Slightly astonished, the guard called over to the guard next to them.
Seeing the medallion, the other guard also was surprised.
They swiftly, now more polite, said: "Yeah, that works, sir."
They permitted him entry.
Taking the Medallion back, Adam entered Walcon.
When Adam entered, he saw several interesting sights.
The ground beneath him was carved stone.
He saw stalls set up to his left and right.
Shops were spaced between houses. There was a stream of people walking around in clothes made of linen, cotton and similar materials.
Humans, dwarves, people of various races bartering, laughing and talking.
There was an occasional carriage that rolled through.
Walcon was lively.
The corners of Adam's mouth slightly lifted.
It was great to see everyone getting along.
What kind of peace existed, what kind of peace had to be protected.
Adam started his search, his arm resting over his helm that stuck to his side.
He saw a shop with an anvil sign, one with a flask, a necklace, and others.
But there was no adventurers guild.
Adam continued his search for the adventurer's guild. Seeing a larger building in the distance, he walked towards it.
Taking in the sights that were around him, peace of mind rising, he soon stood before a large building.
The building larger than the others by a decent margin had a sign of a sword that was overlapping a shield.
Believing it was the place, Adam took a breath.
This likely was the adventurers guild, a place he only read in novels.
Excited, he entered.
His ears were immediately bombarded with laughter, yelling and crying.
There were a sea of emotions at play, in the building.
People were seated at tables were wearing metal armor, to robes, to leather. Their weaponry equally diverse, wielding swords, staffs, flails, bows.
In the back, there was a tall wooden board with papers hanging off of it.
In the front, there was a lady in a grey uniform, her blond hair tied, standing at a desk.
Adam walked up to the desk, shaking off the excessively noisy distractions that surrounded him.
He stated: "Hello, I am Adam, is this the adventurer's guild? I am looking to join."
The lady replied, with a slight nod, a bright smile on her face: "Hi, Adam, I am Velna the receptionist of Walcon's Adventurer's Guild."
"I can help you sign up, if you indeed want to be an adventurer, I will require you to fill out a form though."
Hearing this, Adam said: "Sure."
Swiftly, a form was placed on the desk, and a ink quill was placed near him.
Thanks to the translation skill, he was able to make sense of the language. Otherwise, Adam would be in an less than comfortable position, in trying to fill out the sheet.
The form asked his name, skillset, and such.
He filled it out, the translation scribing the respective letters in his thoughts, he would write down.
Handing back the sheet, Velna looked it over. Assured it was correct, she went back into a connected room behind her, a few minutes later returned. As she did, she extended her arm, handing Adam the infamous adventurer's card.
"Welcome Adam to the Adventurer's Guild!" She commended.
"Adam, all adventurer's start off as F Grade. To promote yourself to a higher grade, do more and harder quests.
"Prove yourself by showing your dependability and capabilities."
"If you need further assistance, or have questions, do not be afraid to ask," Velna informed.
Thanking her with a slight smile, he took hold of his guild identification card and looked it over.
It read: Adam Wildeblood (F Rank Adventurer).
He felt excited.
He was an adventurer!
Putting the card away, he walked over to the quest board. He looked for a quest that matched his adventurer grade.
There were quests for gathering herbs, hunting rabbits, slaying goblins, escorting, etc.
Starting from the basics, he took a herb gathering quest from the board.
He wanted to work his way up. Adam felt that his reputation would be better if he formed a more solid foundation for his adventurer career. Rather than suddenly taking a dragon down, which he knew he couldn't even do yet.
He was not in a particular rush.
After doing such quests for a bit, he could work to the more risky quests.
He showed the receptionist that he was taking the request, and headed to the quest location she directed him to.
Based on the sketch, it was a familiar location.
The forest for the 3rd test, or as the quest listed the Marshlin Forest.
Putting his helm on, he set off to complete his first quest.
