Bab 6: Mate

Gray

I got back from the after party with my brother at 8:30 pm. I knew my parents won't be home by now because they had to go welcome a neighbor. I had barely parked when Kade jumped out of the car and made a beeline for his room.

I made my way to the kitchen in search of dinner. Most of the pack were out or asleep so there wasn't anyone around. After digging around in the freezer for a while, I found some leftover veggie chili and pita, so I put it in the microwave and decided to take a shower while I wait.

I plopped my bag on the floor of my bedroom and stripped my clothes before heading to the bathroom for a cold shower. I love cold showers after a game. I wash my hair twice, making sure to comb through all the curls because we get sprayed with all sorts of drinks when we win a game. Last time, I had to visit a doctor because there were ants on my pillow when I woke up. I turned off the water and wrapped a towel around my waist as I walked back to my room drying my hair. The front door opened and I could hear laughing from downstairs.

I plopped on my bed and scrolled through my phone. A lot of text messages from the guys telling me "great game", some girls asking if I want to hang out, and Ed telling me to call him. Typical. After getting into a pair of joggers and drying my hair, I plugged my phone in to charge and jogged down to meet the rest of my family. They were chatting up a storm about something.

"Hey, guys, what's all the excitement about?" I said as I kissed my mum on the cheek. As usual, she had already taken out my food from the microwave and set it on a plate. It smells so delicious, but so does something else cause I am one hundred percent sure lasagnas do not contain fruit.

"We just met our new neighbors. They're old friends of mum and dad. Kade?" Mars said enthusiastically. She likes them already so it's either they're an old couple or have young children.

"He's up in his room. He spoke about turning in early because he's exhausted. Any chance they have a daughter?" I ask. The scent is making woozy at this point because it's literally wafted around my sister and she doesn't usually smell like that.

"Yes, they do actually. Also a boy in your year. May I ask why?" My dad questions as he takes out some cranberry juice from the fridge. No, he doesn't have any U.T problems. Judging from how he consumes that stuff, I think he's just addicted. He's in his early fifties, although he acts like a child sometimes. Minimal strands of gray hair grace his head, very little wrinkles around his grey eyes but he's still agile as always.

"Just wondering what fruit's in the fragrance. I've never smelled anything like it before", I admitted as I set my food on the table and grab a stool. At that, they all stop what they're doing and stare at me.

"What? You're all looking at me like I've stolen something," I chuckle nervously while taking a bite out of my food.

"Uhm, Gray? She didn't wear fruity perfume. She doesn't even own any fruity perfume. I didn't see any in her room at least," Mars said curiously.

"I think my baby found his mate," my mum said in tearful whispers while pulling on my cheeks.

"Congrats son," my dad said before taking a sip of his 'cranberries on the rocks' and slapping my back.

"I think I'll head up to my room. Night," I said and slipped off the stool. I think my lasagna's coming back up.

"What about your dinner?" Mars called after me as she took my place on the stool.

"You can have it," I shouted from the stairs after realizing that I left a half plate of food.

I slammed the door shut and slid into my desks chair. I pulled my phone out of the drawer and called the only person I could think of. After two rings he picked up.

"Ed I'm in some serious trouble," I said to him while trying not to panic. Edward and I have been best friends ever since he started school here. He's the only person I trust.

"A'ight what's her name?" he asked while slamming his laptop shut. The guys always studying. I could tell I interrupted him and I feel bad but, this is important.

"Mate?" I said while listening to how it sounds coming from my mouth.

"M-a-t-e. That's a nice name-oh my goodness! This is bad. Bad. Extremely bad. What happens to basketball?" He asked while sounding anxious. I'm the one in this mess and he's the one having a panic attack. Wow!

"I'm still going to play," I said as a matter of fact. I love the game and I'm not going to stop because of some girl.

"Whatever. Just don't hurt her. As it is, I don't see any reason to reject her," he added.

"Honestly, I haven't even met her yet. But I know she's new here. My parents and sister just got back from visiting her," I said while scratching the back of my head.

"I'll be there when you meet her. You just have to chill bro," he said as if he could sense my rising stress levels.

"Thanks. By the way, practice starts at six am," I added as an afterthought knowing how pissed he's going to be.

"Why does this guy have to be such a bad omen?" he asked under his breath.

"Probably his wife, but no one knows," I chuckled.

"Yeah, well I better get to sleep so I can deal with his lazy butt on Monday," he said. Coach Freidrich isn't lazy. He's a veteran who looks a lot younger than his age. Plus, he's well built too. The only way to tell he's in his late fifties is the grey streaks in his hair. Yet, girls still drool over him. Disgusting

"Pre-stress stress?" I asked as I spun in my chair.

"Exactly. Later," he said. Before I could carry on the conversation any further, the line went dead.

I pushed myself out of the chair as I went over to the bed and collapsed on it with a sigh. This wasn't supposed to happen. I guess I'll just have to figure it all out on Monday.

I turned over in a futile attempt to get to sleep. But since that didn't work, I decided to go on a run to tire myself out. So I get off my bed and walk to my balcony. Then as quietly as possible, I climb down and shift. The least I can do is trace my mate's smell.

I run as fast as I can because of the weather changing. The air is getting more moist, which is one of the first signs of rain. I follow the scent from the trees as close to the road as I can without being seen, leaping over logs and running through muddy puddles, and stop when the scent becomes very strong. I can't go further than this because I don't want to be seen, but at least now I know where she lives. My wolf couldn't contain it anymore and he let out a loud howl, filled with a dozen emotions, and continued to do howl as we ran back home.

I hope everything works out.
