By the time Allen walked into the gym, it was almost 9. He spotted Gerry near the squat rack, already in the middle of a set. Gerry had clearly been there for a few minutes, the light sheen of sweat on his forehead. Allen dropped his bag in the locker room and made his way over to him, giving a quick greeting as he stretched his arms.

"Morning, man," Allen called out, trying to sound as casual as possible.

Gerry finished his set and looked up, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. "Morning," he replied, but his eyes immediately narrowed as they scanned Allen's figure. He frowned, his gaze stopping on a few of the plasters barely hidden by Allen's long-sleeve workout top. Most were on his neck, peeking out from under the collar, and one on his wrist. It was subtle, but noticeable enough for Gerry to raise an eyebrow. "What the hell happened to you?" he asked, with genuine concern in his voice.
