Bab 34: 34

"What pretty girls? I didn't even eat enough tonight!"

Pei Yujang didn't realize the ambiguity in her words at the moment. After a long day of work, she had been dragged by someone she disliked to a dinner where she had to put on a façade and keep her temper in check. She felt like a wind-up toy that had finally run out of energy, desperate to collapse as soon as she got home.

And that driver had the nerve to start off by talking about taking her to see pretty girls. What nonsense.

"There was only Zhao Longshuang there, an old friend of mine. We don't hang out much anymore," Pei Yujang explained after a moment, just in case Yu Zhiwan got the wrong idea.

Zhao Longshuang was actually quite attractive. The original Pei Yujang was a complete face-enthusiast, and though the friends she made weren't always of good character, they were at least easy on the eyes. But beneath Zhao Longshuang's pretty face lurked a venomous heart, a disaster waiting to happen for anyone who got too close.

The original Pei Yujang's downfall in the novel was inextricably linked to Zhao Longshuang. She had always enjoyed goading the original into conflicts with her family, telling her that Pei Jinhui was holding her back. Zhao Longshuang even suggested that Pei Jinhui's marriage to Fan Zhaozhao meant she was biased toward her new wife and didn't really care about her daughter.

Zhao Longshuang had even planted the idea that Pei Jinhui's generosity toward the original was guilt from a possible past affair with Fan Zhaozhao, which had led to the divorce from her Alpha father.

The original Pei Yujang, who was like a child still in the throes of rebellion, had been swayed by Zhao Longshuang's words and even considered confronting Pei Jinhui.

Pei Yujang didn't like Zhao Longshuang, but it was troublesome that she held leverage over the original, making her a real thorn in the side.

"Oh, by the way," Pei Yujang said, remembering something after finishing the sobering soup that Yu Zhiwan had prepared. Even though she hadn't drunk any alcohol, she drank it out of politeness, downing it like water before washing the dishes. After some hesitation, she decided to tell Yu Zhiwan, "The place Zhao Longshuang took me for dinner was a bathhouse, and I saw Liu Huanran there."

Pei Yujang knew that the entertainment industry two hundred years ago was well-developed, but a bathhouse where people openly flirted in the lobby was beyond her understanding.

The bathhouse looked quite luxurious, and while she didn't know the prices of the dishes, the craftsmanship and refined decor suggested it wasn't a place ordinary people could afford.

Liu Huanran was being flirty with a pretty girl there. Pei Yujang had wanted to take a photo, but before she could get out her phone, Zhao Longshuang had appeared, making it awkward to take pictures in her presence.

Moreover, Pei Yujang was sharp. She had noticed that Zhao Longshuang's questions were unusually pointed, and when she lowered her head to drink the chrysanthemum tea, she had caught a glimpse of Zhao Longshuang's micro-expressions, leading her to suspect that the room might be bugged or have hidden cameras.

It was possible that Zhao Longshuang knew Liu Huanran and was asking those questions on her behalf.

If she had admitted to stealing her subordinate's girlfriend, her reputation would have plummeted, and it might have even gone viral online. The public, with its love for gossip, might have even condemned Yu Zhiwan as a fickle Omega. The world was unfair to Omegas, burdened with moral constraints, and Pei Yujang didn't want Yu Zhiwan to be subjected to such baseless criticism.

Yu Zhiwan didn't show any reaction to the news of Liu Huanran's flirting—no anger, no jealousy. It was as if she had heard the name of a stranger, her emotions unruffled.

Pei Yujang felt a small surge of joy.

She wasn't sure why she was so pleased—perhaps because it seemed like the female lead had finally moved on, unlikely to engage in a never-ending, torturous relationship with Liu Huanran.

In her mind, Liu Huanran belonged in the flames, not earning the right to simply endure some hardship and then win back the beauty.

After drying her hands, Pei Yujang called out to Yu Zhiwan.

"Do you want me to take you home?"

Yu Zhiwan softly murmured in agreement, adding in a drowsy tone, "I'm so sleepy."

She seemed to have come over right after taking a bath, dressed in a cozy coral fleece pajama set with a cute embroidered bunny on the front—a stark contrast to her usual simple, mature style. But even though Yu Zhiwan was still young and naturally beautiful, the youthful attire suited her well.

With her head slightly tilted in a yawn, her fluffy hair falling over her shoulders, Yu Zhiwan looked both casual and relaxed. Pei Yujang stared at her for a moment, seemingly deep in thought, before grabbing a thin but loose down jacket from the rack and wrapping it around Yu Zhiwan.

She opened the door and lifted Yu Zhiwan, along with her wheelchair, carrying her quickly back to her home.

Yu Zhiwan's house was only a minute's walk from Pei Yujang's, but she managed to shorten it to thirty seconds, even with the time it took to find Yu Zhiwan's keys and unlock the door.

After shutting the door to keep the cold night air out, Pei Yujang turned on the heater before gently placing the sleepy Omega into bed.

She carefully adjusted Yu Zhiwan's pillow and tucked her in. After waiting for a few minutes to let the warmth fill the room and drive out the cold, she checked the doors and windows one last time before quietly leaving the house.

Hearing the soft sound of the door closing, the "sleepy" Yu Zhiwan slowly opened her eyes.

Pei Yujang had recently received one piece of good news and two pieces of bad news.

The good news was that Yu Zhiwan's project plan had been a great success. The moment it was announced, it became a hot topic, outperforming previous product launches.

After years in the business, Yue Rong's official account had over fifty thousand followers, not a huge number, but they were real. The marketing department had a strict policy against fake promotion and buying followers.

However, Yue Rong's decline over the past two years meant that even their posts saw little interaction, sometimes with comments barely reaching double digits. This time, the product launch was done with extra care, including a new fragrance promotion in all their stores, sparking significant public interest.

Most cosmetic products focus on visual and functional aspects, with marketing strategies that have become increasingly extravagant over the years. From collaborations with brands to celebrity endorsements, many have been criticized for focusing more on marketing than quality.

Pei Jinhui was optimistic about this launch and boldly initiated a pre-sale. The numbers were even better than previous official releases, boosting her confidence and making her eager to bring the product to market.

But the head of the marketing department advised her to wait. After all, Yue Rong was the first to introduce "original liquid fragrance cosmetics," and being the first to try something new naturally attracted a lot of attention.

Several bloggers had already posted videos from Yue Rong's stores, trying out the fragrances. This gave Pei Yujang an idea: every store would use different fragrance samples during the pre-sale period. Customers who collected all the samples could receive a trial set and be among the first to get the new product when it launched. No gimmicky "worth XXX yuan gifts," just something tangible and practical.

Yu Zhiwan's aesthetic sense was spot-on, and the fragrance samples received positive reviews online. However, some bloggers criticized them, saying it might just be another marketing ploy and questioning whether the same scent could be effectively used in the actual cosmetics.

But regardless of the criticism, the campaign's success was undeniable, generating more buzz than buying a spot on the trending list.

After all, a trending topic might not even catch anyone's attention without sustained investment, and it could easily disappear unless continuously supported by money. This time, the trending topic rose naturally, fueled by influencers trying out the samples and generating organic traffic.

Pei Jinhui was thrilled, eagerly looking forward to the product launch, even logging into the official account to personally respond to some questions.

As a result, Pei Yujang was in a much better mood.

But the two bad pieces of news were that Yu Zhiwan's blackening value hadn't decreased, and Zhao Longshuang had issued another ultimatum.

Zhao Longshuang had been relatively subtle before, but this time she started by asking if Pei Yujang still wanted the Alpha pheromone extract. When Pei Yujang refused, she complained that she might face trouble because of it, implying that Pei Yujang should pay to make the problem go away.

Paying a bit of money wasn't the issue, but Zhao Longshuang was asking for ridiculous amounts, including a "brokerage fee" and "communication fee," along with other miscellaneous charges, adding up to over five million yuan.

If Pei Yujang paid this, she'd be playing the fool, letting herself be taken advantage of while helping others count the money.

It was uncertain how much profit they'd make in the first quarter, and money wasn't as easy to come by as one might think. Few people had five million yuan to casually throw around, and considering this mess was the original Pei Yujang's doing, she didn't have that kind of income. Was she supposed to ask Pei Jinhui for the money?

Besides, these people were like a bottomless pit, always coming back for more.

If she was too afraid to go to the police, she'd be continually blackmailed.

But using Alpha pheromone extract to impersonate an Alpha wasn't a severe crime unless she marked an Omega without consent, posed a threat to public safety, or was sued. In most cases, it would result in a fine, usually a few thousand yuan at most.

This country's legal system classified crimes into different levels, and as long as the offense was classified as Level E or lower, it could be settled with double the fine, keeping the matter confidential.

The levels were classified as A, B, C, D, E, and F. Some Level E offenses couldn't be kept confidential, but others could, like minor physical altercations that didn't cause serious harm. Both Level E and F could apply in such cases, with F being the least severe.

Pei Yujang even considered whether she should just turn herself in.

Yicheng was experiencing another bout of rain.

For a northern city, continuous autumn rain was uncommon. By late November, Yicheng was already approaching winter, with cold winds sweeping through the streets, reducing foot traffic as people opted to stay indoors.

Yu Zhiwan had stayed behind at the company to help prepare for the project launch, and it wasn't clear how long she'd be there, so Pei Yujang left early. With no nightlife to speak of, she had dinner at the mall and then took a stroll through the newly opened park.

Despite the biting cold of Yicheng's winter wind, which seemed to sting the lungs with every breath, Pei Yujang wasn't bothered.

She enjoyed this peaceful, cozy life—sometimes ordering takeout or dining at a restaurant after work, and occasionally joining Pei Jinhui and her family for dinner.

Fan Zhaozhao and Jiang Wenxiu weren't bad people. Fan Zhaozhao was a bit chatty, and both she and Pei Jinhui doted on Jiang Wenxiu just as much as they had on the original Pei Yujang. They had their quirks but were generally well-meaning. Pei Jinhui often couldn't make it home for dinner, usually returning late at night, but she had regained some of her youthful vigor thanks to the new project Yu Zhiwan was working on.

In a few days, the "Floral Essence Series" would be launched, and the entire Yue Rong team was filled with anticipation, with everything moving in a positive direction. Pei Yujang was already thinking about borrowing some money from Pei Jinhui after this period to pursue something she was more passionate about.

The looming threat of the apocalypse two hundred years later still gnawed at Pei Yujang, a constant reminder that even in peaceful times, she needed to stay vigilant.

As night fell, Pei Yujang made her way back through a narrow alley after leaving the park, feeling the first drops of rain start to fall. Winter rain was cold and biting, and while she had planned to jog home, she realized she'd need to buy a raincoat.

As she navigated her way to a convenience store via GPS, she heard voices coming from a nearby alley.

A sleazy voice, raspy and leering, said, "This little girl's got smooth skin, looks like she's from a rich family."

"You got x-ray vision or something, boss? How can you tell she's got smooth skin under all those clothes? Or did you already cop a feel?"

"Shut up! There's no cameras here. Are we doing this or not?"

Pei Yujang froze mid-step.

She bit down on her lip and, despite the cold rain, quickly located the source of the voices and sprinted toward a small intersection in the alley.

A woman, drenched and trembling, had dropped her umbrella and was cowering at the end of a dead-end alley, sobbing softly. Hearing footsteps, the three thugs turned around, initially wary, but their faces lit up when they saw it was just a woman.

The leader, a large man, grinned wickedly, likely mistaking her for an easy target. He approached her with a predatory smile.

"Get out of the way!" Pei Yujang shouted.

"Oh, looks like we've got a feisty one here," the leader said, his grin growing wider as he prepared to charge at her. But as soon as he reached out to grab her, Pei Yujang twisted his wrist effortlessly.

A blood-curdling scream tore through the rain as Pei Yujang delivered a swift kick to his groin, using all her strength. The man's eyes rolled back as he collapsed in the dirty puddle, unconscious.

The woman had wisely ducked into the corner to avoid getting splashed.

After quickly taking down one thug, Pei Yujang didn't chase the other two as they fled. Instead, she approached the shivering woman in the corner.

The woman, panicked and teary-eyed, clutched the umbrella she had picked up from the ground, water streaming from its frame.

"Are you okay?" Pei Yujang asked gently, keeping her distance. "It's safe now. Let's get out of the alley, okay?"

"Help me…"

"What?"

The woman's words were muffled by her accent, making it hard to understand. Pei Yujang leaned in slightly, bending down politely to hear better.

"Help me call the police…"

Before she could finish, the woman suddenly swung the wet umbrella at Pei Yujang's face!

Pei Yujang's reflexes were sharp—she deflected the umbrella and grabbed it, ready to counterattack. But the umbrella was just a distraction. The woman had a spray can in her hand, and in the pouring rain, she aimed it directly at Pei Yujang's face.

The noxious spray filled the air, and while Pei Yujang managed to cover her nose and mouth, she still inhaled some of the fumes. She realized too late that the umbrella had been coated with something, making her grip slippery.

Fury and frustration welled up inside Pei Yujang.

She had overestimated the safety of this supposedly peaceful society. While corruption plagued the higher-ups, the ground level had managed to keep most things under control. She didn't want her vigilance to lead to ignoring a girl in danger.

The man she had taken down was out cold in the puddle, and Pei Yujang wasn't about to let the woman who had deceived her get away either. She wasn't sure what they had used, but she still managed to knock the woman out with a single blow.

Just then, a group of men in black raincoats appeared at the entrance of the alley. Pei Yujang estimated that she could still hold her ground for a while longer, shaking her head to clear the fog as she launched herself at the men, kicking one down while trying to grab her phone.

Rain fell like a curtain, drenching the phone screen, and the cold sting of the rain helped Pei Yujang stay somewhat alert.

Her phone slipped in her grasp like a slippery fish, nearly dropping several times. In the narrow alley, about ten men had gathered, blocking her way out. One of them released a burst of Alpha pheromones, targeting her specifically, but it was useless against her as a Beta.

Pei Yujang was confident in her fighting skills, but even she couldn't take on so many at once. Her situation was dire, surrounded on all sides, and she even called out a few times in the hope that someone would hear.

She had read plenty of novels where the protagonist was cornered in a dark alley, with the world around them eerily silent. But she hadn't wandered off to some remote area—there were still houses nearby with lights on. Yet, whether it was the rain muffling her voice or something else, no one responded, and no sirens could be heard.

When one of the men came at her with a fierce punch, Pei Yujang used his momentum to step back, her chest heaving in pain, but it gave her the chance to retrieve her phone.

She only had time to randomly press a button before the phone had to be used as a weapon, hurling it to block a blade aimed at her.

Amidst the pouring rain, Pei Yujang heard a busy signal.

This was the second time since she crossed over that Pei Yujang had ended up in the hospital.

The last time she had been hospitalized, she had been too groggy to remember much. Apparently, the original Pei Yujang had drunk too much and passed out after rescuing Yu Zhiwan.

This time, she still didn't know what had happened afterward.

Before losing consciousness, she had been hit multiple times and hadn't heard any sirens. The last thing she vaguely remembered was someone trying to smash her with a brick. With the last of her strength, she had instinctively dodged, shielding her head and curling up to brace for the impact.

When she first regained some awareness, she had braced herself for broken limbs or ribs. But as she tentatively moved, she realized she had no signs of surgery—her limbs were intact, and it seemed she had only suffered some superficial injuries.

Pei Yujang was sensitive to injuries, not out of fear of pain, but because she knew her limits.

She felt a surge of relief that she had managed to survive intact. Her stomach growled loudly, and just as she was about to get up in search of food, she heard a noise outside.

A young nurse entered the intensive care unit.

Seeing that Pei Yujang was awake, the nurse beamed and rushed over, placing a hand on her forehead to check her temperature. Satisfied that there was no fever, she finally relaxed.

"Miss Pei, you're still a bit weak. You've been out for two days after the poison extraction. I'll get you some glucose soon, and your wounds have been bandaged. I'll be back to change them when it's time, so please don't move around too much."

"What poison?" Pei Yujang quickly caught onto the crucial part of the nurse's words.

She had been poisoned? Was the woman's umbrella coated with poison? What kind of toxin was it?

"It was an inhalation-type toxin, a mixed compound with traces of poppy extract. But don't worry, this situation doesn't count as voluntary drug use. The amount was small, and we've already done a minor procedure to remove it."

Pei Yujang frowned as she processed the information.

Poppy flowers can be used to produce drugs. In her previous life, she had stayed far away from vices like gambling, drugs, and prostitution, and now she had been forced into a situation where she had unknowingly experienced it all. Even though the nurse assured her it was nothing serious, Pei Yujang's mood soured considerably, her earlier relief at surviving quickly evaporating.

The young nurse jotted down a few notes in her notebook before leaving. She returned shortly with a tray of neatly sliced fruit, offering them to Pei Yujang.

Pei Yujang thanked her and reached out to take the fruit, but the nurse stopped her. She was young, as indicated by the "intern" label on her badge. Gently pushing Pei Yujang's hand away, she picked up the fruit bowl and said earnestly,

"You should rest properly, Miss Pei. It's our duty to feed injured patients."

The nurse's face practically screamed her intentions, clearly hoping to get closer to the beautiful patient. Although Pei Yujang had never been in a romantic relationship and wasn't particularly sentimental, it was obvious to her what the nurse was trying to do. Ignoring it would be too much of a stretch.

Pei Yujang was someone who understood her own looks well—neither vain nor self-deprecating. While she might not be a stunning beauty that everyone would fall for, she knew she was attractive enough to turn heads, especially among those who were attracted to women. Lying in the hospital bed, her long legs and slim waist weren't fully visible under the hospital gown, but the way the loose fabric draped over her figure hinted at her curves.

Her long, black hair cascaded down, contrasting with her slightly pale complexion, giving her an approachable and somewhat vulnerable appearance that could easily stir someone's protective instincts.

The young nurse, likely bored during her shift, had probably decided to shower the bedridden beauty with extra attention. But unfortunately for her, Pei Yujang was a disciplined, no-nonsense figure who, even during the apocalypse, had been notoriously hard to charm. A few slices of fruit weren't about to change that.

Seeing the nurse insist on feeding her, Pei Yujang kindly suggested,

"The elderly gentleman in the room next door is a lonely old man who could really use some extra care. If you take this bowl of fruit to him, I'll be sure to vote for you as a 'model of compassion' before I leave the hospital."

The nurse blushed furiously, clearly embarrassed at having her intentions so blatantly exposed, and then asked,

"Why two votes?"

"One for me and one from my girlfriend," Pei Yujang replied, catching the sound of a wheelchair outside the door. As if on cue, Yu Zhiwan entered the room just as she finished speaking. Today, the Omega's hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail, making her delicate face appear even more youthful and energetic.

Yu Zhiwan had brought her some fruit and candy, along with a basket filled with something unknown.

Pei Yujang inhaled deeply, catching the scent of something delicious. She was starving and had no intention of following the doctor's advice to eat slowly. After years of surviving in the apocalypse, her stomach was as strong as iron, capable of handling anything without issue. She wasn't worried about any delicate digestive concerns post-recovery.

She longed for Ningxiang's fish maw hotpot, pizza, and Yicheng's peppered beef bones...

The nurse left the room, her face flushed, as if she wanted to disappear.

Pei Yujang's so-called "girlfriend" wheeled herself to the bedside. As hunger gnawed at her, Pei Yujang eagerly asked what Yu Zhiwan had brought for her, only to see the Omega pull out a small bucket of cream puffs from the basket.

And then, a steaming bowl of beef offal noodles, a Yicheng specialty that Pei Yujang had tasted once or twice in her previous life and had craved ever since. The noodles, prepared in a shop on the outskirts of town, were rich with plenty of beef offal and flavorful broth simmered over a low flame, with hand-pulled noodles adding to the experience.

The small side dishes, all served in tiny plates, were just the right amount for one person, and paired with the beef offal noodles, they made for a perfect meal.

Pei Yujang took a deep breath, savoring the aroma that filled the room.

"Would you like some fruit now?" Yu Zhiwan asked her.

Pei Yujang nodded, then quickly shook her head.

If she ate fruit now, where would she find room for all the delicious food?

Although she was starving, the fruit would fill her up too quickly. She needed to save as much space in her stomach as possible for the good stuff. Yu Zhiwan's timely delivery of food couldn't have been better.

Pei Yujang thought happily.

"Pei Aunty had some things to attend to today, so I came to see you instead. Fan Aunty and your sister also came by once, as did Zhao Manlin. They were all hoping you'd wake up, but since you were out for two days and two nights, they couldn't stay and had to come back later."

Pei Yujang listened to the explanation, but she didn't care much about who had come to see her. After all, she was still alive, and it didn't matter who visited.

After Yu Zhiwan finished explaining, she set the washed fruit aside, placing it just out of Pei Yujang's reach, and then opened the beef offal noodles. She found the small table nearby and sat down, unwrapping the disposable chopsticks.

Pei Yujang gradually sensed something was off.

Was this not meant for her?

Yu Zhiwan, meanwhile, took her time opening the chopsticks and began to eat the noodles, slowly and elegantly. The rich aroma of beef broth filled the air.

If it were only in her imagination, Pei Yujang might have been able to brush it off. But here, in reality, someone was right in front of her, eating the food while she could only smell the delicious scent and hear the sound of someone else enjoying it, her mouth dry and tasteless.

Pei Yujang had drunk some water earlier and was now hooked up to an IV, so while she wasn't in much pain, her stomach was growling fiercely.

She stared longingly at Yu Zhiwan.

But as a blind person, Yu Zhiwan couldn't see her gaze and therefore didn't respond.

The Omega ate slowly and gracefully, chewing carefully, even sipping the soup with a small spoon rather than drinking it straight from the bowl like others might.

The scent of beef was intoxicating, making her crave it even more. When Yu Zhiwan was halfway through her bowl of noodles, Pei Yujang finally realized that Yu Zhiwan was deliberately teasing her. She wasn't sure when Yu Zhiwan had started doing this, but Pei Yujang's hunger was making her brain go fuzzy, causing her to abandon her usual pride.

"Can I have just a sip?" she asked.

She wasn't asking for much, just a bit of broth—no beef, no noodles, just some soup to warm her up.

It was as if Yu Zhiwan could read her mind. As soon as the soup cooled a bit, she lifted the bowl and took small sips. Pei Yujang grew increasingly anxious as the delicious smell filled the room, fearing that Yu Zhiwan would finish it all.

Sitting on the bed with an IV in her arm, Pei Yujang began to pout, something she had never done before. She wasn't sure where she had picked up this behavior, but it seemed to be an instinctive, natural reaction—something everyone was born knowing how to do.

"Zhiwan, please?"

"Yu Zhiwan, Wanyu, pretty sister, please?"

Pei Yujang's voice wasn't particularly sweet, but it wasn't overly masculine either—it was clear and pleasant, making her pleas sound quite sincere.

Even though Yu Zhiwan couldn't see, she could easily imagine the woman lying in the hospital bed, trying her hardest to win her over like a large, adorable dog begging for a treat from its owner.

Pei Yujang's pitiful whimpers filled the room, and she showed no signs of stopping. Her brain was too foggy from hunger to feel embarrassed.

Finally, Yu Zhiwan, unable to resist any longer, brought over the last bit of soup. Just as Pei Yujang reached out to take it, Yu Zhiwan turned her wheelchair away and finished the last of the broth herself.

Pei Yujang: "!!!"

Seeing how much Pei Yujang cared, Yu Zhiwan had initially planned to tease her further by eating the cream puffs in front of her, but she decided against it. After wiping her mouth, she suddenly asked a serious question:

"Do you regret it?"

To Pei Yujang, the last incident had been a senseless disaster. The woman had clearly lured her into a trap, and when things didn't go as planned, she had betrayed her without a second thought, showing no gratitude for Pei Yujang's attempt to save her.

Pei Yujang paused for a moment.

She didn't know what had happened afterward, but she suspected it had something to do with Zhao Longshuang. The woman was cunning and hard to pin down. But not knowing didn't change her feelings on the matter.

Without hesitation, Pei Yujang shook her head.

"Why would I regret it? If I had the ability to save someone and stood by while she was bullied or assaulted, I'd regret it even more. Could I just call the police and do nothing? If something had really happened to her, wouldn't I feel worse?"

Yu Zhiwan lifted her head sharply.

"But what if… what if she was just tricking you?"

"Then so be it. I came out of it unharmed, didn't I? I only had to spend two days here."

Sensing Yu Zhiwan's concern and frustration, Pei Yujang flashed her a broad smile and leaned back against her pillow, reflecting,

"You could say I have a hero complex, Zhiwan. I can't just ignore a situation where I have the power to help. If she hadn't been faking it and had actually been harmed, the consequences would have been far worse than me lying here for two days with a few cuts and bruises. The poor girl might have been assaulted or even killed—how much worse would that have been?"

"While it's true that the victim is never at fault in cases of assault, they often bear the brunt of the blame from society. It's hard for them to recover and move on. It's not as easy as just saying they'll get over it."

"If I were the type to be afraid and only think of myself, I wouldn't have saved you, and we wouldn't have met. I only stepped in because I saw there were a few of them, and I knew I could handle it. I didn't rush in blindly, but you can't predict everything that will happen."

Pei Yujang took a deep breath.

"But I wasn't alone—I had you."

In this world, it wasn't difficult to track a phone, even if it was broken. The call records could still be traced back to an IP address. She trusted that Yu Zhiwan would understand her meaning. Only after confirming that the call had gone through to Yu Zhiwan did she feel safe enough to toss the phone away.

She just had a gut feeling.

Yu Zhiwan wouldn't abandon her.
