Bab 1: prologue
" Joshua take heart, this is not the end of the world," one of the sympathizers said to me " shedding tears won't bring your parents back so stop westing tears," another said to me rashly after becoming impatient and annoyed because of my tears, but I couldn't stop crying " where are the refreshments," one of the elders said as they come in into our compound. " no kola nut nothing at all, what can of nonsense is this ! "another shouted as they sit and saw nothing at their table, immediately one of my uncle's rush out of the house " sorry our elders but I just sent my wife to the market to get some stuff " my uncle apologies " she better be fast," another elder said and I was shocked by that sentence
Although am nine years old still little but am still sensitive towards certain things, here I am crying because of how I instantly become an orphan, and here the elders are, asking for refreshments, what a world
Here is a country where people pray so that people can die to get fed, I don't blame them but I blame the leaders for making things harder than it has to be.
" Hey boy can you stop crying your cries won't bring them back so that we can discuss how to bury them and get over it! " one elder shouted at me as I cry harder " can you take him away for us to discuss how to bury his parents and think of what to do with him, " the head of the elders asked my uncle " yeah sure " my uncle answered as he signaled to me to go inside the house and I nod still crying as I enter my room.
How surprising right, yes not all people in this country come to sympathize with you when bad things happen to you especially when it comes to the tragic part, come to sympathize with you, some come to know whether the person is dead, and some of the gossipers came to see what to gossip about, some came to mock you claiming that they are sorry, while some came to eat, some don't even care but the came because is something that must be done and some came to sympathize. But the elders came because something must be done, is their duty as the leaders of the community.
"Where is your wife, we don't have all day, " the first elder said, " please can we be quiet and calm can't you see we lost a couple who left a little son here? " one of the elders said, " please Mark shut up because we lost someone doesn't mean our rite shouldn't be given to us, they are not the first couple that dies and won't be the last okay" the first elder cautioned elder Mark " at least we should show some respect and sympathy, you know when they are alive, they help a lot of us in this town," elder Mark says as he sees how furious his fellow elders are " mark doesn't even make me mad, Joshua parents were rich and they did want they are meant to do and now they are dead, what else? , is it not to bury them and continue our life, is not that they are that rich, popular and powerful, if not that little business they are managing in Canada how can they could have survived" the first elder said making elder Mark speechless.
This is how my country is when you are rich, people will admire you and love you but when things turn around for you, they will turn their back on you
