Bab 84: 84. Is Allen Going to Get the Axe?

"When are you planning to inform Allen and the others about the combat competition between the Wolf School and the Cat School?"

The Chief, feeling somewhat disappointed, glanced at the reveling Allen and said, "Tomorrow, at least let them enjoy the celebration tonight."

Vera nodded slightly, her smooth, pale chin moving just a bit. She said no more. The two of them stood there, leaning against the wall in a dark corner where the bonfire's light couldn't reach, watching over Allen.

---------

Time swiftly passed amidst the toasts and cheers. The bonfire's flames had grown weary, now barely half the height they were at the start. Under the dim light, the long table reflected the golden glow of the dripping fat.

Only the black-haired boars from Blue Mountain could produce such a glossy fat under intense flames. Unlike ordinary wild boars, these required very few seasonings, and the roasted meat naturally emitted a woody fragrance. Unfortunately, now all that remained on the table were various bones glistening with fat; not a single piece of pork was left.

"Bang! Bang!"

Wooden tankards clashed, releasing the aroma of malt beer.

"Gulp~ Gulp~"

After downing the delicious beer in one go, the witchers planned to head to bed.

"Let's... go... Allen... let's head back to the apprentice dormitory..."

Hughes, with his speech slurred, urged Allen to leave together.

"No need to go back to the dormitory."

Vesemir blocked the four of them.

"You are now official witchers. You can choose a room in the main keep."

After a pause, he continued, "If you don't have anything to collect, you can come with me now."

Hughes and the others were momentarily stunned, then elated.

Their own rooms?

Yes, they were official witchers now and no longer needed to share a big room with others. For the first time, Hughes, Bond, and Fred felt the reality of "I've truly become a witcher."

Even participating in the exclusive witchers' banquet earlier hadn't given them this feeling. In an instant, it was like being reborn. They instinctively looked at Allen.

It was this person who shared the Killer Whale decoction with them, then hunted a Foglet alone, helping them pass the Killer Lake. Later, he diverted Old Spearhead and even warned them about the rock troll's personality beforehand…

Although the result wasn't great…

But thanks to Allen, they almost unscathed completed the Mountain Trial. For a moment, gratitude overflowed from Hughes, Bond, and Fred's hearts.

Seeing their expressions, Allen smiled and patted their shoulders, saying, "Let's go, witchers."

"Let's go check out our new home."

------

Kaer Morhen was a castle. Such buildings are generally used by nobles to defend territories, expand lands, and control areas. Their military defensive function outweighs their residential purpose. Therefore, every castle's construction implies a perceived enemy in the builder's mind.

As they followed Vesemir to their quarters, Allen scanned the towering black walls around him, and a question suddenly popped into his head.

Who was Kaer Morhen's perceived enemy?

Monsters?

Thinking of this, Allen sighed inwardly.

This ancient fortress, despite its strength, was eventually destroyed during the defense of Kaer Morhen. Previously, he could dismiss it by thinking the worlds were different. After all, even the core prophecy of saving the world with Elder Blood had changed. Moreover, potions, blade oils, and signs' powers, even the characters were different.

At least major figures like Vera and the Chief, even if they died, should be mentioned in the game or novel's background, but he had no memory of them.

On the other hand, characters like Vesemir undoubtedly existed, and he saw some notable figures from the game and novels in the library. This made Allen feel that the history of the witcher world he knew seemed to be in a state of both reliability and unreliability. So, while Allen remained vigilant, he harbored some wishful thinking.

Perhaps the Battle of Kaer Morhen might never happen.

Until he saw, a wizard from Ban Ard arrived with the king's decree. His curiosity about Kaer Morhen exceeded what was appropriate for a king's messenger.

"So, who are the Wolf School's enemies?"

"Court wizards? Ban Ard Academy? The Council of Wizards? Or the king of Kaedwen? The nobles of the Northern Kingdoms?"

"Or perhaps, not just one enemy?"

Allen sighed again.

It was precisely this sense of being enemies with the world that drove him to urge the Chief to stay vigilant, even if it meant lying.

Allen feared waking up one day to a fireball to the face and Kaer Morhen being gone.

"There's still too little information."

Allen sighed once more, but then he remembered he was close to earning the title of master witcher. With that title, his status in the school would rise, and he'd gain more critical information. At least he wouldn't be the only one providing somewhat dubious intel during his last report to the Chief.

"Alright, we're here."

Vesemir's voice interrupted Allen's thoughts. He looked up and was taken aback, asking: "Hmm?"

"Isn't this the west tower?"

Vesemir nodded, saying, "Yes, this is the west tower."

After a moment's pause, he lowered his voice with a strange expression, "It was Vera's suggestion, and the Chief agreed, considering certain factors, to let you stay in the top floor of the tower, the former quarters of the school's chief wizard."

Allen's expression turned odd upon hearing this. If he remembered correctly, this should be where the plot of The Witcher 3 begins.

Vesemir, seeing Allen's hesitation, thought he was worried about gossip and reassured him: "With your talent and the title of master witcher, you don't need to worry about idle talk."

To Vesemir, who was part of the Wolf School's master witchers, just the Killer Whale decoction alone qualified Allen to stay there. Not to mention the drowner's whistle and the ice spear spell.

In the past, the school's wizards weren't so considerate. They only maintained the trial of the grasses for apprentices and didn't create special potions, tools, and signs for witchers.

Allen nodded without explaining, bade farewell to the reluctant Hughes and the others, and ascended the stairs. He was very familiar with this tower, and apart from the apprentice dormitory, it was the place he visited most often. The tower had three floors; the second was the alchemy lab, and the third was Allen's new home.

Considering it was late and the essences of the drowner king and Old Spearhead had been waiting half a day, Allen didn't stop at the second-floor alchemy lab and directly went to the third floor.

"Creak~"

The door, intricately carved with various patterns, opened.

"Huh!"

A gasp of surprise.

The familiar room layout wasn't what shocked Allen.

What truly surprised him were the luxurious red-trimmed wool carpet, the various silver-framed oil paintings on the walls, the silk curtains swaying in the breeze, and…

The faint scent of orange mixed with cardamom in the air.

Allen stood there, stunned, mumbling to himself: "I... I might not live to see the fall of the Wolf School, and the Chief might chop me down first."

Bab 85: 85. You're Not Even as Good as Letho!

After a moment of silence, Allen stopped and closed the door.

"Creaaak~"

The uniquely styled wooden door shut. The distinctive faint fragrance became more noticeable with the airflow. His mind was foggy, and he looked around instinctively. There were no hidden stairs; above was just the pointed spire of the tower. This was indeed the top floor, his new home.

"It seems I didn't get the wrong place?"

Allen was still somewhat uncertain. After organizing his thoughts, he cautiously opened the door again and walked in.

"Lady Vera?" he called out softly.

There was no response.

"Bang~"

He took off his boots, and the moment his feet touched the soft carpet, they were enveloped by its softness. Taking a few more steps forward, he bypassed the red silk screen.

A steaming, waist-high wooden bath barrel came into view. The familiar scent of orange mixed with cardamom filled the air. On a small table next to the bathtub, a vase with a few red, white, and blue wildflowers was pressing down a letter. He walked over, lifted the vase, and unfolded the letter.

"Allen, congratulations on successfully crossing the threshold of life and death..."

"However, with talents like the Ice Spear Spell, Killer Whale Potion, and Drowner Whistle, wouldn't you be more suited to becoming a sorcerer rather than a witcher?"

"Don't waste your talents. Vera's alchemy classes are always available on the second floor of the tower..."

"Lastly, have a good hot bath..."

"...Goodnight...my most successful investment..."

The handwriting on the letter was clear. Although it had a bit of a cursive style, the strokes were simple and easy to read. After reading the letter, Allen's anxious heart calmed down.

"So, this isn't the sorceress's room."

"But these furnishings and paintings must have been prepared by the sorceress, and they look quite valuable."

As he undressed, Allen examined the surrounding living items. Each one looked very expensive, especially the bathtub before him. Just a moment ago, he was too nervous to notice, but now he saw that the edges of the bathtub were decorated with gold and silver threads.

"If this had been right after I transmigrated, I'd probably be scared to death, wondering if Vera was planning to eat children."

Allen mocked himself.

"Bang~"

His leather armor and undergarments fell to the carpet, and Allen walked up the small steps beside the bathtub.

"Splish~"

He didn't know when this water had been prepared, but the temperature was just right. It was slightly hot but perfectly within the range a witcher's skin could handle. Even better, when he crouched down, he found a small platform to sit on, and there was a backrest that fit perfectly.

"Ah~ Comfortable~"

As the fragrant hot water enveloped his shoulders, the orange scent filled his nostrils, and the cardamom aroma became lighter. After enjoying this for nearly ten minutes, Allen remembered his original plan.

He opened the Witcher's Journal with his mind.

[Name: Allen]

[Level: 20]

[Health: 100%, Stamina: 240/240, Magic: 230/230]

[Attributes: Strength16, Agility17, Constitution24, Perception17, Mystery*23]

[Affinity: Water*3]

[Experience Beads: Experience Beads27, Small Experience Beads3093]

[Essence Liquids: Drowner King's Heart Essence2, Cyclops' Heart Essence2, Drowner's Heart essence*189]

[Treasure Chests: Drowner King's Treasure Chest12, Cyclops' Treasure Chest12]

[Items: Killer Whale Potion 4, Necrophage Oil 3, Mirage Pearl*1, ...]

[Evaluation: Witcher Novice!]

A big harvest!

After the mountain trial, Allen had a huge gain. Due to the level suppression needed for hunting small monsters, the gain of experience beads was secondary. What excited him the most were the four large monster heart essences and twenty-four treasure chests.

His gaze lingered on the treasure chests, and Allen resisted the urge to open them now. The treasure chests should be opened at the witcher apprentice dormitory, where he once opened a double-gold treasure.

Large monsters were rare, and it would be at least half a month until the next conjunction of the spheres. Moreover, he didn't yet know the pattern of the conjunction.

The few drowners transported last time had given him a warning. The conjunction of the spheres—drowners might not always bring a drowner king.

Without understanding the transmission mechanism, every opening of a large monster treasure chest had to be cautious. As for his new home, he should wait until he had lower-level treasure chests to test it out and get familiar with the environment.

In the witcher world, there were gods and fate. When it came to increasing his strength, he somewhat believed in luck.

"Ah~"

With a deep breath, Allen summoned the items from his inventory.

[Ding! Do you want to use the Drowner King's Heart Essence?]

With a thought, a stream of coldness instantly surged down Allen's esophagus.

With three points in water affinity, the Drowner King's Heart Essence no longer left him in a sorry state. After consuming the first essence, Allen immediately used the second. Moments later, the cold dissipated, and a sense of abundant power surged up.

He glanced at his stats.

[Attributes: Strength19 (+3), Agility20 (+3), Constitution27 (+3), Perception18 (+1), Mystery*29 (+6)]

[Affinity: Water*5 (+2)]

Repeatedly using the same type of heart essence indeed resulted in diminishing returns on attributes. This time, using two Drowner King's Heart Essences, he only gained 16 attribute points, 10 less than the previous time. But it was still enough. As long as his attributes kept increasing, it was fine.

In the witcher world, there were always new prey waiting for him. Moreover, with his current attributes, he probably already surpassed those ordinary witchers who had hunted independently for ten years. In other words, thanks to this month's essence, Allen had saved at least ten years in terms of attribute growth. And today's enhancement was only half finished.

[Ding! Do you want to use the Cyclops' Heart Essence?]

As soon as his mind clicked on the use, a thick liquid settled into his throat. From the Adam's apple to the esophagus, and finally to the stomach, every part felt much heavier. However, unlike the first use of the Drowner King's Heart Essence, Allen only felt the heaviness without any severe pain like frostbite or stabbing.

A glance at his health bar showed it hadn't decreased either. Feeling the digestion of the essence, he thought that even if he took this potion before the Trial of the Grasses, it wouldn't harm him much.

"I thought the Cyclops would give me a critical hit like the Drowner King."

He had already prepared himself to get injured again from this essence.

And yet, it was just this?

Since his body was fine, Allen consumed the last essence.

[Health: 100%, Stamina: 310/310, Magic: 300/300]

[Attributes: Strength25 (+4), Agility22 (+2), Constitution31 (+4), Perception18, Mystery*30 (+2)]

[Affinity: Water5, Earth1]

Splash~

A clearly defined, sculpted, muscular body leapt out of the water and landed lightly on the red wool carpet. In an instant, the 28-point attribute increase made Allen feel invincible. He clenched his fist, feeling the overwhelming power like magma in a dormant volcano. It was hidden and not erupting, but when it did, it would be explosive.

"With this power, what is there to fear in any battle?"

Allen was instantly filled with heroism. Even with an inflated ego, reason remained. Just as Allen was about to calm himself by looking at Vesemir's stats in his Witcher's Journal, he suddenly came across Letho's data.

[Name: Letho]

[Attributes: Strength28, Agility34, Constitution57, Perception61, Mystery*15]

"Huh?"

"I'm not even as good as Letho, what was I just inflating myself over?"
