Bab 9: A Voice in the Void

A Voice in the Void

Eliar walked cautiously through the dark expanse, each step echoing in the silence. The air here was heavier, colder, as though it carried the weight of something ancient. The smooth stone underfoot glowed faintly, veins of crimson light tracing patterns too intricate to be random but too alien to make sense.

His breath fogged as he exhaled, and he tightened his grip on the energy that thrummed faintly in his hands. The mental construct flared in the back of his mind, weaving and shifting as it constantly recalibrated, reacting to every pulse of the world around him. It felt alive, responsive, as though it were adapting alongside him.

"Where am I?" he muttered, his voice swallowed by the void.

The construct didn't answer, but Eliar wasn't expecting it to. He sighed and pressed forward. The silence was oppressive, but not empty. He could feel something—watching, waiting. It was distant but present, like the faint echo of a heartbeat in the farthest reaches of his mind.

And then, he heard it.

A voice.

Faint at first, almost imperceptible. It wasn't a sound exactly—more like a ripple that reverberated through his thoughts. Eliar froze, his heart racing as the construct flared brighter in his mind. The patterns twisted and pulsed, responding to the voice with sharp, jagged movements.

"Who's there?" Eliar called, his voice sharp. He turned in every direction, but the void offered no answers. The only sound was his own breathing, rapid and uneven.

The voice came again, clearer this time. It wasn't speaking words—at least, not in any language Eliar understood. It was a series of tones, resonant and melodic, yet discordant enough to make his skin crawl.

Adapt.

The word wasn't spoken. It was felt, imprinted on his thoughts with chilling clarity. Eliar's breath hitched, and he staggered backward, clutching his head.

"Get out of my mind!" he shouted, his voice cracking.

The presence didn't leave. It pressed harder, its weight suffocating, relentless. Images flashed through his thoughts—fractured, fleeting glimpses of places he didn't recognize. Towering spires made of twisting stone, endless seas of black mist, creatures with too many limbs and too many eyes.

Eliar clenched his fists, the construct surging to life in response. The energy around him flared, forming a protective barrier that pulsed in rhythm with his racing heartbeat. The presence recoiled slightly, but it didn't retreat. Instead, it lingered at the edges of his mind, waiting.

"Is this what you want?" Eliar growled, his voice low. "To break me? To see how far I'll go?"

The voice didn't answer. It didn't need to. The weight of its silence spoke volumes.

The ground beneath Eliar's feet shifted suddenly, the smooth stone cracking and splintering. He stumbled, barely catching himself as the crimson veins flared brighter. The world around him twisted, the void seeming to close in on him. The silence shattered as a low, guttural growl echoed through the expanse.

Eliar turned, his eyes narrowing as shadows began to coalesce in the distance. The growl deepened, reverberating through the air as the shadows took form. Crimson eyes blinked open, their light piercing the darkness.

"Of course," Eliar muttered, his lips curling into a bitter smirk. "Because it wasn't hard enough already."

The creature stepped forward, its form massive and jagged. Its body shimmered like oil under faint light, its limbs unnaturally long and ending in razor-sharp claws. Teeth jutted from its too-wide mouth, and its movements were erratic, predatory.

Eliar raised his hands, the construct flaring to life in his mind. The energy around him pulsed, eager and volatile, waiting for direction. His thoughts moved faster now, sharper, as though the construct itself was driving him.

The creature lunged.

Eliar reacted instinctively, shaping the energy into a jagged barrier. The impact shook the ground, and cracks spread through the barrier's surface. The creature snarled, its claws raking against the glowing wall as it pushed harder.

"Not this time," Eliar muttered through gritted teeth. He twisted the construct, redirecting the energy into a concentrated spear. The threads of light pulsed brighter, responding to his command.

The spear shot forward, piercing the creature's chest. It let out a shriek, its body dissolving into ash that scattered into the void. Eliar collapsed to one knee, his chest heaving as the barrier faded.

But the void didn't return to silence.

The voice came again, louder now, resonating through the chamber like a drumbeat. Eliar clutched his head, his thoughts spiraling as the presence pressed against his mind once more.

"Enough!" he shouted, his voice raw. "What do you want from me?!"

Adapt.

The word came again, clearer this time, and Eliar's knees buckled under its weight. He sank to the ground, his hands trembling as the construct flared brighter in his mind. It wasn't just reacting now—it was building. Expanding. Changing.

Eliar gasped as the construct shifted into something new, something more intricate. The glowing threads wove themselves into patterns he hadn't seen before, creating a system that pulsed with raw, untamed energy.

"What is this…?" he whispered, his voice shaking. The energy around him surged, responding to the construct's changes. It wasn't just guiding him anymore—it was evolving with him.

And for the first time, Eliar didn't feel like he was fighting it. He was shaping it. Controlling it.

He pushed himself to his feet, his legs shaking but steady. The presence lingered at the edges of his mind, watching, waiting. Eliar clenched his fists, the energy thrumming in his palms.

"I don't know what you are," he said, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. "But I'm not breaking. Not for you. Not for anyone."

The void didn't respond, but the weight of the presence began to lift. The air grew lighter, and the crimson veins pulsed faintly, their rhythm slower now, almost calm.

Eliar exhaled, his shoulders sagging. He wasn't sure what had just happened, but one thing was clear: he was still alive. And he was still adapting.

As he walked, the silence returned, but it wasn't oppressive anymore. The void felt less like an enemy and more like a challenge—a puzzle waiting to be solved. Eliar tightened his grip on the energy in his hands, his gaze steady as he moved forward.

This world wasn't done with him, but that was fine. He wasn't done with it either.
