Bab 13: Chapter 13: On Loan to the NSA

The sun had already set when Derek Rogan received the summons. He was returning from another mission in Central America, exhausted, when the special operations lieutenant called him into the command room for a talk. The officer's face was serious, and the atmosphere held a different tension than Derek was used to feeling before an operation. He knew something new was coming.

"Rogan, we have a new assignment for you," the lieutenant began as Derek entered. "But this time, it won't be with MARSOC."

Derek frowned in confusion. He was used to being loaned to other agencies, but each time this happened, it was an unexpected challenge. "Where am I being sent now, sir?"

"The government has a sensitive operation underway, and the NSA has asked for your support," the lieutenant replied, sliding a folder across the desk. "They need someone with your skill set."

Derek picked up the folder and opened it. The front page bore the emblem of the United States National Security Agency, followed by a technical summary of what the mission would entail. As he read, his eyebrows rose. "The NSA, sir? I didn't know they were looking for tactical operators."

"This is a different kind of operation than you're used to. They need a field expert to deal with a hard-to-find target. Someone who can infiltrate and at the same time understand how to navigate difficult terrain."

"What's the target?" Derek asked, turning the page.

"A group developing advanced interception technology, something that could compromise the entire communications infrastructure of the United States and its allies. The NSA has been tracking these guys for months, but they're good at hiding. We need you to go into the field, lead the infiltration, and recover the data before they can launch any kind of cyberattack."

Derek was silent for a moment, digesting this information. He knew the NSA wouldn't call in a field operative for no reason. "And where will this happen?"

"The target is moving through Eastern Europe. Romania, Ukraine, possibly even Russia. It's a volatile zone, and the American presence cannot be detected, so you'll be operating under total cover."

The drive to NSA headquarters was quick. Derek found himself in a heavily guarded building on the outskirts of Fort Meade, Maryland. The contrast between the dark, lethal atmosphere of the military missions he was on and the quiet, meticulous world of the NSA was stark. Each room seemed to be soundproofed, with computer screens constantly flashing as they scanned the globe for cyber threats.

He was led to a briefing room where a woman with brown hair pulled back into a tight bun was waiting for him. She seemed like someone of authority, but in a low-key way, the kind of person who didn't need to raise her voice to command respect.

"Operator Rogan, I'm Agent Kayla Warren," she introduced herself. "You will be working under my supervision during this mission. The situation is extremely sensitive."

"Nice to meet you, Agent Warren," Derek replied, shaking her hand. "What's the status of the mission?"

Warren pointed to a large screen in the center of the room, where various data and images were projected.

"As you read in the report, we're after a group we call Spectre, a cyber cell with ties to Eastern European criminal groups. They're developing technology that can intercept data in real time and take down entire communications networks, both civilian and military."

She continued, her voice firm and detailed. "Spectre is hiding somewhere in Eastern Europe. Our cyber operations have managed to track part of the group to Romania, but they're nomadic. We need you to infiltrate and obtain crucial information on the ground, and perhaps perform a physical extraction of one of the leaders, if possible."

"Understood," Derek replied. "But why would the NSA want me for this mission? This sounds more like the work of a cybersecurity team."

"Yes, but these cyber operators are well armed and have already foiled several attempts at remote infiltration. We are convinced that the only way to neutralize them is in the field. You have experience in covert operations, you speak the language, and you know how to blend in. What's more, you have operated in unstable areas like this. You are the ideal profile."

The next day, Derek boarded a plane to Bucharest, where he would meet with the local intelligence team that would support his operations. As soon as he landed in the Romanian capital, he was greeted by the cold, foggy weather typical of early autumn. An NSA contact was waiting for him at the airport, and he was soon taken to a discreet hideout, a modest-looking house on the outskirts of the city.

"Welcome to Bucharest, Mr. Rogan," said the man who greeted him. It was a local intelligence agent named Pavel, who spoke English with a slight accent.

"Let's get straight to the point, Pavel," said Derek, already accustomed to these brief, professional introductions. "Where are the targets?"

Pavel led him to a small office at the back of the house, where maps and documents were laid out on the table. "We've managed to locate some Spectre members. They're moving between Romania and Ukraine, using clandestine routes to avoid detection. We have an informant in one of the towns near Chernivtsi who can lead us to them."

Derek studied the map, tracing the routes with his eyes. "What about the equipment? I need to blend in, so nothing that draws attention."

"We have everything ready for you," Pavel replied, opening a suitcase with civilian clothes and discreet surveillance equipment. "You'll be an ordinary American tourist."

The next few days were a mix of surveillance and discreet meetings with local informants. Derek moved around the area without arousing suspicion, his beard growing out to give him a more unkempt appearance that was less likely to be associated with an American soldier. The tension grew with each passing day, for the closer he got to the heart of the operation, the clearer it became that Spectre was a real and growing threat.

During one of his nights of surveillance, hidden in an abandoned building on the outskirts of a border town, Derek overheard conversations in mixed Russian and Romanian. The men were discussing the latest advances in the interception system they were developing. That meant he was in the right place.

"The target is here," Derek whispered into the microphone on his collar, reporting back to the NSA support team monitoring his movements.

"Understood, Rogan. Infiltrate and capture any data you can."

Derek took a deep breath. It was time for action.

The operation was executed with clockwork precision. Derek, silent as a shadow, broke into the compound where the Spectre men were stationed. Using his tactical skills and knowledge of the terrain, he managed to capture the crucial data for the operation without alerting the group. At the end of the mission, he came face to face with one of Spectre's leaders, but he decided not to risk physical capture at this point.

"I have the data," he radioed. "Removing it now."

Back at base, Derek handed the material to Agent Warren. "Here's everything we've gathered on Spectre. Hopefully this will help the NSA neutralize them."

Warren smiled, pleased. "Excellent work, Rogan. This will give our cyber team what we need to dismantle this group from the inside out."

As Derek left NSA headquarters, he couldn't help but think that each new mission took him into a different, yet equally dangerous world. While he was used to combat and infiltration, dealing with the complexities of cyber operations was new—and challenging. But as always, he was ready for whatever came next.
