That day I spent most of my time with Rhonin talking about the history of this world as well as teleportation magic. I have been thinking of taking the other flying necropolis for myself and linking them with semi-permanent portals.
I could use the power of death that lingers as a byproduct of necromancy as fuel. I ran my idea past Rhonin and he said Dalaran uses a similar system to permanently keep portals open. Rhonin also gave me nearly a hundred books about the recorded history of this world.
About the history of this world, I learned that there have been quite a few wars that have shaped this world and many of them have happened as recently as a few years. The first war happened when the arguably most powerful sorcerer in the world, Medivh, was corrupted and betrayed Azeroth.
He opened a portal to a land called Draenor where orcs under the manipulation of the Burning Legion invaded. These orcs are the first and original 'Horde'. Gul'dan, an orc warlock, wanted to find the tomb of Sargeras.
It is a tomb that held the corpse of the avatar of Sargeras, the leader of the Burning Legion and the most powerful being they know of. Eventually for reasons not recorded Gul'dan fell into a coma and an orc by the name of Orgrim Doomhammer killed the orc leadership and took control.
Under his leadership, he cleansed the warlocks who served the Burning Legion from their ranks. There he created the new Horde with more pure orc values and they forced the kingdom of Azeroth out of their lands. Stormwind fled north seeking aid from Lorderon.
Ogrim foolishly spared Gul'dan's life when he resurfaced, in return Gul'dan raised an army of the dead for him. That's when the Death Knights were created. The Horde began winning fight after fight with this new power.
But Gul'dan abandoned them and went to the tomb once it was found. But was killed at the tomb of Sargeras having been killed by something unknown. Due to Gul'dan leaving the horde they ended up losing their advantage and were forced back through the portal to Draenor.
Eventually, Thrall led a portion of the horde away believing that they could not win the war. Having been raised by humans and knowing a few, Thrall believed peace was the best option but it was not possible so he led them to the lands now known as Durotar.
Khadgar, one of Rhonin's friends and Mediehv's apprentice, followed them to the portal and managed to wipe out most of the retreating forces. Not only did he kill many of them he also destroyed the Dark Portal which had allowed them here in the first place.
Using artifacts the Horde managed to re-open the dark portal. The artifacts were the Eye of Dalaran, the Staff of Sargeras, the Skull of Gul'dan, and the Book of Medivh.
The Horde allied with the Black Dragon, Deathwing, and planned to invade other planets weaker than Azeroth. Several of the most powerful members of the alliance thought this was unacceptable.
Forming a team Turalyon, Alleria Windrunner (Sylvanas's Sister), Khadgar, Danath Trollbane, and Kurdran Wildhammer, took a few hundred troops and pushed through the Dark portal. They set up a keep and fended off the horde for months on their own soil.
Ner'Zhul, Gul'dan's teacher, and a head figure of the horde had been planning with Terron Gorefiend, a powerful Death Knight, planned to cast a powerful spell. Khadgar had figured this out while they held off the horde.
Ner'Zhul drew power from his dead apprentice's skull and destroyed a portion of the alliance forces capturing Kurdran Wildhammer. Khadgar was powerful enough to be the factor pushing them back but he couldn't be everywhere.
At this point, only a small portion of his horde still willingly followed him
In a final confrontation, Turalyon fought the Death Knight Terron Gorefiend by himself while the other three faced Ner'Zhul. Turalyon barely won the fight while the other three were unable to stop Ner'Zhul. He opened hundreds of portals to a new world, the spell was so powerful that it caused the world to begin to shatter.
Khadgar used the artifacts to close the portal so the destruction did not stretch to Azeroth only sending a dwarf back with the artifacts.
Only a few years later the scourge began rampaging on the northern lands near Gilneas and Lorderon. Expeditions were sent to push them back as an undead plague began to spread. War had returned.
Many things went wrong at the same time, C'thun an old evil god arose from its slumber and began to attack with its insectoid minions but was not yet free of its seal, the Burning Legion launched another invasion upon the world which was the first time demons invaded Azeroth since the avatar of Sargeras thousands of years before.
At the same time, the undead plague had begun making its way through the eastern kingdom. Thrall wanted to work with the alliance to fight off the demons but was rejected and attacked. The Night Elves were able to kill Archimonde, a general of the Burning Legion.
But to do it they ended up destroying the tree that gave them eternal life. Small fights against the demons raged across the world. In the mess, the Night Elves freed someone I find very interesting, Illidan Stormrage. Brother of the Night Elf Leader and second most powerful.
He was imprisoned for thousands of years for wielding arcane magic. Arcane magic is against the Night Elves' beliefs since it is known to corrupt people… Like the Blood Elves. He was forgiven but was later again exiled for wielding Fel Magic, the Burning Legions magic, against them.
He used the skull of Gul'dan to corrupt himself into a demonic form and fight against the demons. He was incredibly effective but fled to the outlands by faking service to Kil'jaeden, another General of the Burning Legion.
While they dealt with Archimonde on one side of the world they dealt with the undead on the other. Arthes Menathil along with his mentor Uther the Lightbringer began to push the undead north.
A major event happened, the food of a city was tainted and the people were poisoned and doomed to turn into feral undead. That is where Uther and Arthas disagreed, along with Arthas's lover and renowned mage Jaina Proudmore butted heads.
Arthas believe they should purge the city before they turn into undead to save those in nearby towns while others believe differently. They did not stop him but they denounced him, abandoned him. This is when he started going down the path of evil.
I personally agree with him killing the city, although it is a disgusting thing to do, letting people live as mindless undead is worse. That is why I use soul power to power my lower undead, not full souls with consciousness and all like this world does.
Thereafter he marched all the way to Northrend purging undead as he did. Once he got to Northrend the consciousness of the true Lich King, Ner'Zhul, brought back by Kil'jaeden as a General of the Burning Legion, tricked him.
He led him to the Runed Blade Frostmourne which slowly corrupted his already weak mind. His mentor and lover had 'betrayed' him and he didn't have much left but hate. He was easy to manipulate. He went back home to Lorderon after that.
The story after that is what I know, he marched north destroying everything. Claiming the Throne of the Lich King as his own creating a storm in Northrend and locking the gates to his citadel.
Heroes also opened the gates to the old god's prison and killed the appendage of C'Thun that was awake. It is unknown if the god is now just sleeping or is actually dead.
Just recently the black portal was opened again as 'Heros' went and captured Illidan who had been building an army in the Outlands. He was preparing for the Burning Legion. Although he did many messed up things I don't believe he is evil.
I personally like him, but he is locked away for good reason, he did commit many crimes after all. Now that the portal is once again open the friendly race of the Outlands, The Draenei, are happily living on Azeroth. There is also now a Naru on Azeroth, a being of light.
After spending a few days reading the books Rhonin gave me about the history of the world I am even more confused. Why are the Horde and Alliance fighting? Why are they not more concerned about the Burning Legion? What about the other Old Gods? So many questions.
