Zara didn't move for a long moment. I didn't even think she was breathing. Her eyes widened slightly, then narrowed and I could feel the anger building in her.

Why was she asking about her parents now?

Panic wanted to make me grab her and cling on, but I knew that was only going to make this worse.

What the fuck had happened today?

Trying hard to keep my breathing slow and calm, I shook my head. "It's not what you think, Zara. I didn't have a clue who you were or… or any of this before they sent me over there—what I told you was true—"

"I don't give a fuck, Ash," she snapped. "You're one of them and you've been pretending to be my friend—to be in love with me, this whole time? Was the whole thing just one big lie?! You didn't even go to Kyrosia, did you? You were just there for me when I showed up at the Palace—"
