The last time was when Max had declared how he had come to know Tinsley was not his daughter. How he had arranged her hand to some Herrington's and George opposed it tooth and nail.

He did not want the same faith for his granddaughter as her daughter. He had mistakenly pushed her into the hands of a monster with too much power and her daughter was in a false notion of love that she let this man do everything to her.

George could never stop regretting his decision to love Marshally less than his still-born son. If only if...he had loved her, things could have been so different.
